More satnav mapping questions. Garmin??

Hi everyone.
I just bought a late 2012 SD4 HSE with the updated interior. The handbook (yes I read it!!) mentions Navtec as the source of the maps. They're now known as "Here" maps. As follows.....
"This is a licence for your copy of the Navigable Map Database originally made by Navtec Corporation."

They're the same maps that Garmin uses.

The handbook also describes a method of adding your own POI data by using a USB stick with the files in .gpx format. Also what Garmin uses.

So I'm wondering if a Garmin update would do the trick. Whole of Europe costs around £50. http://www.garmin.com/uk/maps/numaps

Anyone tried that before I spend hours getting into it? MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Or do as I do and use my Motorcycle satnav.

OR........you can buy a Garmin Nuvi of some description for around £100 which comes with lifetime mapping updates. Just have to figure a mounting solution that doesn't obscure your view through the windscreen.

Well I got a good "NO" answer on another thread.

No, you cannot access the SAT NAV hard drive diagnostically, if that's what you are asking.

When you plug the USB update stick into the car, the data is very slowly transferred from USB to INFOTAINMENT to SATNAV. I suspect the data is cached to the SAT NAVs drive before it is installed. The USB update sticks also have a unique key which is destroyed at the end of the update process, so you can only use the stick on a single vehicle.

I'm afraid there isn't a fast way to by pass the update process on the USB/HDD SAT NAV system.

Although it looks like the workings of the satnav is very similar to a Garmin device, if you can't get into it, you can't update it. So to anyone that wants up to date satnav..............
