Heavy tailgate - help with lifting?

The tailgate on my 2013 HSE Lux is getting heavier as I get older. My wife has real difficulty lifting it particularly as it is a one handed job and especially heavy when the car is on a downhill slope.
If the tailgate popped out a little when the catch was released, just enough to get the fingers of both hands under, it would be a great help.
Alternatively an external handle might be better.
Has anyone got any good ideas to help? MY13 SD HSE LUX Ipanema Sand

one or both of the gas struts is probably failing, try dan at duckworths for a new one

will be easy to change just borrow a strong friend to hold tailgate up as you swap. At work

Thank you CG, Next time I spot a friendly looking FL owner I'll ask if I can try their tailgate to see if it is any easier than mine.
Do you have a FL2? When you release the catch, does you tailgate pop open even a little so you can get your fingers under it? MY13 SD HSE LUX Ipanema Sand

thought that might be the case Laughing

have to lift my tailgate as I press the button, it is a 2007 model so maybe it needs new struts as well. Common sense isn't very common.

I got a pair of struts from here http://www.sgs-engineering.com/ for my last car. Should have done it earlier, it made a massive difference. Replace both. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
