United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver
Another potential turbo issue....

Morning all,

Anyone got any advice for turbo solutions on a 95k 2007 GS with a 'probable' failing turbo... Seems to be getting through a lot of oil and can notice a bit of smoke (mainly at night in the lights of the car following me). Under load I can hear also hear a louder than normal whistle.

Pipes and connections have been checked by an independent garage who also concluded it was probably the turbo going, but weren't overly helpful.

Have people put in reconditioned units in a car of this age? Can't see it being worth a new turbo. Rough idea of cost?

Also, any rough advice as to how long i've likely got before complete failure....?

Thanks

For what it's worth: my son's Ford Focus was diagnosed with a failing turbo a while ago. The symptoms were simply lots of oil all over the place. I found a place that supplies new turbo core units on eBay for about £90 - far cheaper than a complete new turbo - and fitted that. Relatively straightforward job, but it didn't cure the oil leak, which we finally traced to a tiny split in one of the turbo hoses that was completely invisible with the engine running normally, but was obviously opening up under load and spraying a fine mist over the entire engine compartment. Replaced the hose and everything now fine, and the re-built turbo is still going strong after nearly 2 years.

Thanks Tim.

Yes, I am wondering whether it is worth having someone take another look at the pipes as I gather the intercooler hose is prone to splitting as well...

Will have a look on ebay as well for potentially a reconditioned unit.

Cheers
