What is this that's leaking oil?

So, I had some work done on the Haldex a couple of weeks ago. New pump fitted, etc.

About a month before that we had a new driveway laid, at a not inconsiderable expense. The FL2 has never leaked oil.

Today I noticed oil spots (quite large ones) on the brand new pavers. I suspect I hadn't noticed them before as it was fine and dry today, unusually.

I just looked under the car - forgive my ignorance - what are those areas with oil gathering? If it's the Censored Haldex (which never leaked before and I only had looked at due to fault codes, not performance)

I shall be apoplectic.

can't help with the leak but somebody will be along soon who can
to clean the oil off the drive by sprinkling non bio washing powder, cheapest you can find, then spray water over it and let it work for a day and then wash off. Common sense isn't very common.

Another thread: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic28628.html

Here they think it might be overfilled and oil is coming out through the breather. Maybe they overfilled it when the pump was replaced?

In this thread http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic19849.html you see a picture with the location of the breather.

Before you loose faith in the repair . Removal of the Haldex means some oil escapes and sits in the sub frame and will drip for a while. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Yup, I had similar after mine was serviced (there is a trough in the top of the ally casting that can hold more than you expect). I noticed it & just went under & wiped it off. Not sure if it dripped any, my drive is too rough to show that. Sad 1978 Laverda Jota. Stolen...

Again, thanks all.

I assume the cylindrical part at the bottom of the Haldex is the pump - the part I had replaced?

Mixed emotions if you're right - relief that the work may have been done right after all, and frustration that the bloody garage don't do a thorough job and clean up after themselves.

yes, the "cylinder" is the pump. I would wipe it clean & monitor for leaks. 1978 Laverda Jota. Stolen...

Finland

i would thinkt that it is the pinion seal which is leaking, i have buyed some years ago new diff and it started to leak just like that, there is tiny hole bottom of diff which i tried to close but didn't help, pinion seal if between haldex and diff, inside of it.

look if you find curved ring bottom of diff, don't remember is it front or rear of that carrier

here I've got the picture, look if you find this on your diff and if its leaking than its the pinion seal. That tiny washer, where is little hole in it. right side

As yorky says, oil does get trapped in the casting when you drain them out, and it's impossible to clean it all out as it's trapped. Although from the marks on the drive it looks like it could be a bit more than that. Check breather pipe is pushed back on properly. Alternatively it could be the oring on the haldex, the pump or if the filter was changed it could be the oring on that. Doubt it's the pinion seal as never seen one leak. www.bellengineering.co.uk
