I have a 2010 Td4 and have recently had it serviced including new brakes all round and everything seemed fine. I then bought a full set of Hankook extra load tyres which were exactly the same as what was on there but have noticed a noise coming from the back (seems to be from the near side rear). When I slow down to about 20mph it starts making a noise like a wheel bearing going but doesn’t make it any other time, only when slowing. I have taken the wheels off and checked the brakes, they work fine and there is no play in the wheels. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas as to what it could be?

Strange it coincides with the tyre change,have you swopped that wheel with the opposite one to see if noise moves ? PS welcome

Hi thanks for reply, just tried changing the wheels round no difference still same noise at 20 to 30 miles hour, the only thing I can think it might be is a wheel bearing going, although I would have thought it would have made that and louder as speeded up. I did about 150 miles yesterday and I wasn’t going slow

FL2 seems to be sensitive to tyres re noise, usually when they are getting worn but it’s an odd coincidence it’s happened by just changing tyres, and I don’t think it’s a choice that is popular, just possible those particular Hankook don’t suit the FL2. Regards

Last year while out with a mate he said have you got a wheel bearing on the way out I said I need new tyres.
I had 2 new Goodyear Wranglers on the back and moved the back tyres to the front guess what the noise went.

I’ve had the vehicle 6 years and it had Hankook on it when I bought it but they weren’t noisy. As they were beginning to craze I decided to change them so went for identical. The original Pirelli is still in the boot as a spare and the only difference apart from the make is the Pirelli is a 103v but the Hankook are 107v extra load. Hopefully they might quieten down with a bit more wear like the old set however, I don’t know how many miles the old ones had done when I bought it. This set have covered about 600-700 miles so far.

You could try fitting the spare on each side and see if the noise changes/moves/disappears? Regards

I’m going on holiday next weekend towing a caravan. I’ll see what a 1000 miles does to the noise ie makes it worse or cures it. I think it’s called kill or cure

I didn’t fit the genuine parts I fitted Eicher pads and discs from Euro Parts. Do you think this is the problem? What did you fit and where did you buy them from?

I got mine from ECP think they were Pagid brand never had a problem.

On my wife’s car EBC pads were fitted & they were very noisy I ended up putting genuine Vauxhall pads back on problem solved, if you still have the old pads might be worth chucking them back in just to see, (just a thought)

The story of all this is that it was coming up to its 10 year service at Marshalls who are known for not being the most reasonable. The quote for the service and MOT was £1800 plus the water pump and a turbo pipe which raised the price to £2500. I guessed the brakes were getting worn so I decided to do them myself as they wanted another £800. I did the brakes just before it went in and they passed the MOT no problem even though they were a little squeaky. I assumed they just needed to bed in a bit but they are still squeaky 4 months later unless you press the pedal down a little harder. A few weeks after lobbing out the £2500 I had a puncture. The tyres were getting a little low although still legal but I decided to change the lot. This is when I noticed a noise from the back when braking at about 20-30mph. It sounds like a bearing going but yesterday I checked it and there is no play whatsoever and the brakes seemed to work as they should.

It’s all very confusing and I didn’t want to take it in to Marshalls for them to check and be presented with another heafty bill. Any more ideas?

We've got the Eicher discs and pads from Euro carparts on two Fl2's and not had any issues at all , it possibly could be the wheel bearing .

I did not realise it happened when you braked, I read it as you heard it when you slowed to about 20mph, if it ONLY happens when you brake then I think you have a good idea where the issue is, as mentioned above. Regards
