I have another 18 months of warranty/Land Rover assistance so ill look at the end of that period, even if the finance runs a bit after that.

Ive been casually looking around given all the hype about the demise of diesel engines currently being shouted about, and there is basically no other petrol 4x4/SUV type that floats my boat other than the Si4 Ewok but I wouldn't buy one without a rock solid warranty.

Unfortunately, there are lots of other bits to go wrong in my experience. Very Happy 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

After reading the comments and discussing with my wife I am not 100% sure but probably go ahead with the £640 extended warranty cutting out "£150 with - assistant" cost. I have never bought an extended warranty to all the cars I owned previously and touch wood was never faced with serious repair but reading woeful tales here made me asking for your opinions Bow down

@taztastic how much was the EGR repair and does it tend to happen with auto more than manual?

As gasman said life is a gamble so putting £60/month aside may not be enough for front or rear diff. and the "god forbid" turbo failure !

@dorsetfreelander I guess the older the car the more cost for the extended warranty.

Some choices may come down to privilege. We have been in the position of running a few cars from band new and with that costly luxury you know you are not getting an abused cast off. I suspect if the boot was on the other foot a LR 2 year warranty on a used car would have many attractions.

The depreciation on our FL2 is going to quite high now. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Pretty much any car these days (except for some entry level basic cars) are complicated beasts and cost a hefty amount to repair should something go wrong.

4x4 just have the extra gubbins to drive the 2nd set of wheels so a few more components to go wrong.

The FL2 is basically no more expensive to run than a Mondeo, or Insignia or 3 series and no more/less reliable.

If your spending 1000's of £'s on a nice car, its got to be worth a few hundred quid at 3 years + for peace of mind if you can afford it, as cars aren't built to last anymore.

Bear in mind that the LR extended warranty can be passed on to a new owner in a private sale (so might enhance the value) but cannot be passed on via a dealer. So if you have paid for a year's warranty then trade the car in you get nothing back, but if you sell it privately you are able to offer the car with a warranty. (Note - this was the case previously - check the small print in case it's altered). In my case, I paid on a monthly basis, and when I traded the car in I was told "as you haven't had a claim you don't need to pay the balance". Technically, if you pay monthly you are contracted to pay for the year even if you trade the car in. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

@ RogB yes I agreed with you about more parts in the drive train compared to the 2 wheel drive and that is where problem tend to occur Sad

Whichever way you go it's a gamble. I never take out extended warranties on anything, and so far that's proved to be a good strategy. I've had my FL2 for going on 5 years now and could easily have spent the best part of £5K on warranties, but my actual spend in that time, over and above routine servicing, has been discs and pads all round (not covered anyway) and a tailgate switch for around £30.

One thing I have noticed over the years though is that cars 10 years old or more still look very tidy, presumably the paint technology has come a long way and there is more plastic and galvanizing of bodywork now plus when did you last buy an exhaust system ? (used to last 3 years max). I think the general issue with cars now is the more complex electrical systems and sensors and rather poor onboard diagnostics. I wonder how many cars are scrapped due to some obscure fault arising from a corroded connector or earthing point? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Paxman, I've no idea as to the cost, I believe it's quite a job though as it's a Censored to get to, tucked down the back of the engine.
Labour costs would have been quite high I suspect.
I've also developed a leak on the PAS system, do I pay for the hose to be replaced which I imagine won't be covered, or let it fail when it will Laughing
I must give them a call and find out

Paxman.........I had to have my turbo replaced last year £1300 with a service included by a turbo specialist. Wasn't able to get one myself for DIY installation, none to be had at the time. Not a bad job to do, plenty of access once exhaust is disconnected and pushed to one side.
The hard part for me is working out how to disconnect the electrical plug, everyone appears to have a different type of catch. Twisted Evil Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Side cutters seem to work dismantling, bit of a begger on the rebuild though. Laughing FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I bought the extended warranty without assistance @ £640 so many thank for your comments from both camps but I think for the fl2 it's probably worth it even just for your peace of mind.

The extended warranty was about to run out on my 11 reg FL2 but given my history I wouldn't own one without warranty so traded in and got an approved 14 reg with 2 year warranty. I found the LR assist guys very helpful by the way (had them out 4 times) and even did a software update on my drive whilst checking out for a faulty exhaust sensor. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
