United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Rimini Red
Random intermittent catastrophic power loss and misfire

Hi all,

Here's one for you to ponder...

07 plate td4 HSE with 70k on the clock. Usually runs fine but had a bit of a do Xmas eve and ran rough for a while then sorted itself fine.

Fast forward to now and I'm doing about 40 and starting to slow down for a roundabout. Engine drops away to very limited power and runs lumpy. I get off the roundabout and grind to a standstill where a catastrophic rhythmic banging and shaking happens, which felt for all the world like the engine was about to blow itself into tiny pieces. I switch off and on again, still violent shaking and banging, repeat off and on, still the same. Try to rev it and it's flat as a pancake, but then after a bit I can get it above 3000 revs and it clears and runs beautifully again.

Any offers? Hubby suggested possible alternator fault?

Not recently but no code logged after the Xmas incident.

No fault lights on the dash at all either.

Drain the fuel filter and check for sediment or just change it if it been on a while.

My last Freelander had same symptoms when it swallowed a swirl flap! After the first crashing banging missing period it cleared and ran for another 5 miles before another bit of flap jammed the EGR valve open, had to call neighbour who towed me home with his Disco 2.

The good news was that after unjamming the EGR the car ran fine. Hopefully, if yours is the same, it will be ok.

Not quite the same but a couple of times with my 2011 model I had a situation where on starting the engine the car shook madly as if the firing order was out. On switching off and on again it cleared itself. It happened to me at least three times randomly over a period of a couple of years. Others have experienced this and I think it was put down to a specific engine management software glitch. I doubt if the alternator is part of the problem. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Thanks for the input guys.

The EGR has been blanked off, and the car had a service with new filters all round fairly recently.

England 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Narvik Black

Had a similar situation last week during heavy rain on the M40.
First hour of journey my 07 was behaving perfectly as normal but suddenly it started to lose power - had it been a petrol engine I would have been convinced that at least 2 cylinders were miss firing.
I slowed to 50mph and engine ran normally but any attempt to accelerate started the miss fire.
I was near Beaconsfield so I stopped at the services and checked things over. Set off again and for rest of the journey to Kent and the return went as normal and no problems since! Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?
