Stereo & Sat nav - working as separate units?

Hi,

Quick question regarding my -07 FL2.
It has the large stereo and sat nav unit mounted. Does the stereo and sat nav works as separate units, or are these linked together in any way?

Reason for asking, is that I am playing with the idea to remove the head unit and install an after marked double din head unit, and just leave the sat nav unit in place. Will the sat nav unit then work as it does today??

IAM, NAV, DAB, Bluetooth & touchscreen modules are all linked via the MOST Fibre optic network.
If you remove the IAM nothing will work including your park assist.
You'd be better off upgrading to the premium surround sound if your after better sound.
Other members have gone the double din route but I think you'll find they had the "lowline" audio without MOST network.

OK. Sad Sad

I already have the premium surround sound system. I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed over it. The sound quality is not as expected, there is no MP3 support and the FM broadcast system here in Norway will be shut down this year, replaced by DAB+ broadcasting. So basically, except from CD`s, I have to use external units through the AUX in to listen to music. Upgrading this unit to DAB cost more that it tastes. I would have all the necessary functions with a double DIN upgrade. Loosing the sat nav, which also is old and outdated, is OK, but loosing the park assist is bad Sad

Any suggestions for a reasonable upgrade?

DAB+ retrofit is not that expensive to do http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic25664.html

If you want to add iPod or USB for music there are also options to do this with the factory infotainment system. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

£350++++++ is a lot more than a decent DIN2 unit. Anyway.. I will try to see what my options are.

Is there any way to make the park assist work without the head unit?

Probably the easiest way with the parking sensors would be to replace them with an aftermarket kit. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

OK. Many DIN2 units have a reverse camera option. That would work. Would there be any problem making the steering wheel controls to work with a DIN2 unit?

I believe there are some interface kits available to enable the steering wheel controls to function.

But I have only seen such things for high-end aftermarket units, not the cheap china ebay ones. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

The premium Alpine system (with Subwoofer) does support MP3 (and wma). If you also want USB support then get the iPod/iPhone pack plugin upgrade. You would be better off getting one of the aftermarket Navigation / stereo units (eBay) for the FL2 but leave the original navigation screen behind the dash to keep your park assist. The original radio will be in the same spot so it would still look "Factory".
