Erratic Fuel Gauge

Hopping for a bit of advice from some of those with a bit more knowledge than me. Bow down
Returning home the other night my fuel gauge suddenly dropped from just below half to empty, with the amber warning light.
Bit confused at the time so stopped and put some more diesel in at next station. Fuel gauge returned to normal. Several miles down the road, back to zero, ignored it and it went back up again.
Long story short..............did this all the way home. Big Cry
Suspect the fuel sender units which appear to be the favoured culprits after reading other posts.
My question is.......before I commit to this, could it be caused by a failing battery.
This is an 09 vehicle with the original battery which has just started to play up. For instance the stop start sometimes doesn't cut in.
I have ordered a new battery anyway and I know modern auto electronics can play up if they don't get the full voltage expected.
Anyone have experience of this. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

IME, it will be nothing to do with the battery. My MY10 had identical symptoms to yours. Was fixed by the dealer removing tank and replacing sender unit wiring. Although the car was under extended warranty, LRCS paid in full as it was "a known fault" & warranty co refused it.

Dunkley. Do you think its worth having a word with the local dealer about this then ?
Or should I call LRCS.? Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Do a search for "Erratic Fuel Guage". Loads of information on this site. It won't be the battery!

Hi Greybeard
Did the search before I posted. I know its a known issue, some saying its the wiring and others saying its the sender units in the tank.
You can't blame me for looking for the least expensive reason first. Dafter things have happened with car electrics.
Its an 09 car, I doubt LRCS would be interested, but its worth an ask. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

LRCS will insist you take it to a dealer for diagnosis and report anyway. I have an extended warranty so took it straight to the dealer. The warranty/LRCS politics was undertaken without my involvement. Just "Here are your keys sir". Thumbs Up

I had the erratic fuel gauge TSB fix done by a local LR dealer I had never used before. The car was 3.5 years out of warranty but had a full LR Service history from another Dealer.

Cost me less than a new battery Very Happy
