Measure the coolant level - how?

Hi,

I noticed the "low coolant level" alarm in the display this morning, but it disappeared as soon as I started to drive. I am parking the car in a slope, so I guess this was the reason for the alarm. I did open the bonnet to check the coolant level, but as the coolant reservoir is made of black plastic, the min/max marks on the outside is of no use. I could not find any min/max marks on the inside of the reservoir when looking down the filler hole. So how do I check for correct coolant level?

I have driven K-series powered cars for the last 6 years, and I have developed a low-coolant paranoia from this... Very Happy Very Happy

I've had low coolant warning a couple of times during past 18 months. I just top up with a small amount of coolant to just above MIN.

I don't think it's anything more than evaporation or perhaps some weakness in the pressure cap.

I agree, it is very difficult to read unless I use a very strong light. driving on the right side

You could dip it with something like a clean chop stick, remove and place against the outside min and max. I have to do this for my cottage heating oil but the stick is bamboo and 5ft long.

Later models have a clear tank so you could convert it. Remember to use coolant not just water far any top up. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

OK,

So this is basically a bad design. My Rover 75 has min/max marks moulded on both the outside and inside of the filler hole, so the level is easily viewable from both places.

Regarding coolant, is it OK to use the common red OAT coolant mixed 50/50 with water and replace every 5th year or do I need to stick to the OEM fluid?

Bad design ? I think we have to remember these are mongrels and have anything from a Volvo, Ford to what you like in them. Rolling Eyes

You would need to read the original specification numbering and then match up with your local supply or ask your local LR dealer what he uses in your area of Norway. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
