Auto light sensor

Ok so I have the auto lights on all the time but sometimes when I think they should be on when light conditions are low and other cars have their lights on mine are not?
Where is the light sensor located on these vehicles?
Is is something that can be tested or does break?
Really annoying having to switch the lights on when it should be automatic.

Is it not the one in front of the mirror same as the rain sensor. If you cover it in daylight that should bring on the lights
I never use mine I just use the switch
