MY2013 Sat Nav map updating

Hi

Does anyone know if there is a way of finding out the date on the sat nav map on a MY2013. I have been through all the sub-menus and I can't see any date or version.

I am considering updating the software (via USB as we know) but am I right in thinking that it takes several hours and because the system will shut down if left on without the engine running, it will only do it when you are driving (or leave the car idling, not a fan of doing that). And none of the infotaintment works, eg radio? So one could end driving round for several hours or for several journeys to work counting all the rattles and squeaks you hadn't heard before? Or could you connect some form of charger and keep the battery voltage high to stop the system shutting down?

Sorry for all the questions, but before I go down this route, I'd like to know what the experience is likely to be.

Thanks

I am yet to figure out a way to determine which year/version maps is in an IAM2.1 JLR system, with the Volvo's you can see the version, with the Jags & Land Rovers, apparently they don't want you to know...

But it's a 99% chance that you still have the original maps in your car, few people want to spend the £174 on the latest updates...

Regarding your other questions.

The update process is as follows;

1. Slot the USB stick containing the navigation map data into the USB interface.
2. Follow the instructions on the touch screen*.
3. Enter the map activation code.
4. During the update of the navigation map data, navigation, entertainment and telephone features are not operational until the update is completed.
5. The USB stick must not be disconnected from the USB interface during the update process.
6. If the ignition is switched off during the map update, the update will continue automatically next time the vehicle is started**.
7. Once updating is complete, a message is displayed on the touch screen. Press ""OK"" to restart the navigation system, and then remove USB stick immediately from USB interface.
8. Allow 3 minutes for navigation to restart.
9. Exit, lock the vehicle and leave for at least 15 minutes before using the navigation system.
* The on screen instructions refer to ""disk"" during the download process of a DVD based system. The USB procedure is identical.
** An on screen instruction may appear on the touch screen giving instructions the ""map update has paused"", please press the ""cancel"" button to continue the update."

The complete download process may take up to 2.5 hours dependent on the amount of information in the map region download. An example of current USB download times is shown in the following list:
• Europe - 2 hours 25 minutes
• NAS - 2 hours 03 minutes
• Russia - 29 minutes

So if you don't want to be driving around with no music or phone, what you can do is hook up a battery charger to the car (a big one, like >25A) and just let the update run. You may have to "wake up" the car every now & then though by cycling the ignition.

One thing to mention, is that it's now possible to download the maps from the web to your own USB stick, and just pay for the pin code to activate it. It's not via official channels if you know what I mean, but it's certainly cheaper. Send me a PM if you're interested I can put you in touch with the source. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Cambo - many thanks for the replies and sorry for the tardy reply, work gets in the way. Tomorrow I shall certainly take a look at the version via the video link and see what it shows... at the moment it is dark and minus something outside! 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

Ok, looked at the sat nav menu as in the video this afternoon - this is what came up:

Does this mean they are 2012 maps based on the numbers 30.12.02? This is what I would expect based on the fact the car was manufactured in November 2012 and registered on 1 March 2013.

If anyone can help interpret the info, I'd be grateful - especially if they have updated their maps or got a much later build car.

There was also lots of other info, much of it fairly immaterial, although the one with all the satellite info showed which ones it was locked into.

Following all the details in Cambo's reply above, I am going to look into updating the maps. They could be as much a 5 years old now. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

The middle two digits are the year that the map was published.
The last two digits are the map region.

In your case, 30.12.02, it's Europe maps, published in 2012.

The year of publication is typically one year behind the "sales" year, i.e. maps published in 2012 were sold as "2013 maps"

The latest 2017 maps were published in 2016, and 2016 maps were published in 2015, and so on.. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Cambo - thanks for the reply.

Does anyone know at what point in the year do they update the maps? I'd be a bit peeved if I bought new maps and the following month they released an update!

Ct8637 - the system in earlier cars is DVD based and you can buy new discs. I think Volvo discs are the same and cheaper. A search on the forum should provide info. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

The maps for that car are on DVD only, and yes you can use a Volvo disc, MM2 system. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

It varies depending on the region... short answer, I don't know...

I know exactly why you're asking though, I just bought a new map disc here in Australia for $200 and it was from 2015! But it's the latest version currently available. So frustrating! 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Thanks Cambo for the help.

I think on the website that sells the USB stick with the map on you can see if any of the road changes you know about have been included. I don't travel widely but there are some changes to my regular routes... so before I take the plunge I shall check whether it will be worth it! 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

Updated my SatNav via USB method and checked version and it now says region 04? Can you advise what this is please ?
