United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Zermatt Silver
best 17" tyres for comfort

Hi All
I have always wanted a 4x4 but find a lot of them to have a harsh ride, I bought a 2007 Honda CRV 18 months ago and could not live with it so sold it at a loss. 10 min road tests don't seem to help much when choosing a car.,
Anyway after reading lots of reviews it seems the Freelander 2 is good at soaking up the bumps, so I bought one after testing 4 others, and they seemed good, ( they all had good- years or Dunlop's on)
this one has 3 different types of very cheap tyres on it, AND IT SEEMS A HARDISH RIDE
( dropped the pressures down to 30 front and 28 rear and that helps with the cheapo tyres
so can you help choose the best tyres for a comfy ride.
I do not intend going off road, only on the camp sites grass, (sorry that's swearing)
I DO HAVE A BAD BACK AND THINK IT MUST BE ME GETTING PARANIOD.

Hi and welcome

Going to get some Michelin Crossclimates soon as ATS are doing a deal this month on R17 at £133 fitted, more car than off road and its a new all year around tyre. If not available I will go for Pirelli Verde all season that are a bit cheaper. I have been on 2 sets of Good Year Wranglers since new but I think that are now not available, tyre is fine but Michelin should last longer and be quite.

All 4 need in my opinion to be the same make and moved front to back every service for equal wear so as to not damage the transmission. Thumbs Up FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks for your replies.

Been scanning tyre reviews and the AVON ZX7 seems to have good reviews.
HAS ANYONE HAD THEM FITTED and if so comments welcome.

Thanks

Mike

Mike, got Avon zx7's fitted about 3 weeks ago....I'm very pleased with them, good grip in the dry & with the rain we've had lately I can now say that they preform well. Looks wise, nice deep treads & a simple understated sidewall.

I have used General Grabber AT on mine (235/65/R17) and found them great on, and off road. Just had one fitted at local tyre dealer and paid £102 all in.

Goodyear Wrangler HP AW tyres in 235/65/17 are still available. Blackcircles among others have them in stock.

Pirelli Scorpion ATR, quiet tyre on road , ATR is fine in snow, good enough not to worry about winter tyres, great on grass. It has a rim protection bead that works. Drives nicely , steering fine, very reasonably priced around £100 from ATS for 17" rubber. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I'd been very pleased with the ride quality and overall performance of the original 17" Goodyear Wrangler HP AW tyres fitted to mine, so replaced them with a full set of the same this week. Ordered them from Blackcircles, price was only £90 per corner Very Happy

Crossclimates now ordered for fitting next Saturday, only time will tell if they are worth the extra money but I would hope for an immediate quieter ride. Neutral FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Low profile tyres will give the harshest ride as there is less cushioning effect.

Yorky Bob,
What size are you getting fitted?
Looking on various websites, including ATS and Michelin UK they say they don't do Crossclimate in 235/65/17.

Cant find the tyre

Yes boys and girls I got caught up in that and then found out they are not yet selling a V speed crossclimate rating version but they do it as W speed rating tyre and at that size/rating it does a million miles more an hour that I need. So if you see me on the M1 doing 150 mph plus you know at least that I am in control Rolling with laughter FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
