Auto lights playing up

Yesterday whilst driving into work I noted that my autolights were on...in broad daylight. Coming home from work, the dash light was still on and as I got home I made sure the lights were and sure enough yep. So I turned off the engine and restarted. No luck. Turned the autolights off and again no luck. So immediately I'm thinking the car is in my possession for 5 days and already I have a gliche with the sensor or something like that. Rolling Eyes

Anyway, today it is fine. Seems to have righted itself. Smile

Any thoughts on this?

Try cleaning the outside of the windscreen in the area of the interior mirror(top centre) a small amount of debris, even a perfectly positioned dead fly will obscure the sensor and switch on the lights Thumbs Up

They are AUTO LIGHTS Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing Rolling with laughter

Seriously though, you don’t really explain what the problem is Confused Auto lights seem to work respective to the outside light - like if it is dark then they are on if its is light (maybe) they should be off. At least here in Norway where the dipped headlights are on during daytime (automatically - no switches turned) when the motor is running. However if full beam is turned on the steering wheel stalk it only lights up the full beam on the headlights if it is dark. If it is daylight the headlights remain on dipped. The dash lighting also only comes on automatically when it is dark.

I can’t remember what the system is in Australia, but I seem to remember it is the same as the UK? so maybe a UK resident can help you out better? 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

I thought the light sensor was in the middle of the dashboard next to the windscreen (at the bottom) Question Confused ______________________

actually the lights sensor is in the top sensor with the rain sensors

I know as i have just been out to confirm it by placing my hand on both of them,

Test 1) Dash sensor looking thing = no change

Test 2) Rain sensor cluster = Lights coming on

The sensor on the dash is for the key fob operation as I understand. You press your key fob to unlock the car, this sensor recieves the info and unlocks the car, as if by magic !!

If the FL2 is anything like other cars I've had, the one on the dash is part of the climate control. The car knows if the sun is beating down on you and adds a little extra ac. 09MY FL2 Td4 XS, Style Pack, Privacy Glass, Martinique Blue.. oh so very blue..

It was in the morning 7am and going home 4.15pm. DAYLIGHT hours. So the auto lights were playing up. Seem to have rectified themselves for now.

Thanks folks

I have posted about this before - Mine do the same thing.
Sometimes lights come on as I go under heavy tree cover and then even in sunlight don't go off.
Turning off the engine sometimes re-sets the auto lights and sometimes it doesn't!
Next day it works fine again. I have learned to live with it Rolling Eyes FL2 TD4 XS Santorini

this afternoon, I was parked up in a sunny patch and the car was there for a while, reversing out I went in to a shaded part, it was when i pull up behind a car i knoticed my lights where on at 10:45am

I presume if the cars in sun light it takes a brightness reading and by going into a shaded area it assumes its getting dark, thus switching the lights on.

Maybe been in direct sunlight it gets confused Question Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I've sometimes found that if you leave the lights on manually on for a while, then switch to auto, they stay on wher normally they wouldn't. Admittedly, this test is even less scientific than waving my hands around in front of the sensors but it seemed to work.
