Turbo Whooshing Noise....

Hi all,

I have a early FR2 (56 plate), I've owner her from new and touch wood she has been great over the past 9 years, mainly the reason I still own her.

I've just ticked over to 107,000 miles.

Whilst out yesterday I could noticeably hear the noise of the turbo, it sounded like wind rushing into the cabin when I was accelerating.

I don't have any warning light up and no visible smoke coming from the exhaust.

Does any one have any ideas?

Many thanks

Graham

If not the intercooler hoses, then it might be the intercooler itself - mine had a split down the near side - no error codes initially, but towing the van eventually gave boost error. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Thanks both, I'll get someone to have a look at the hoses the weekend and fingers crossed it's just a hose!

Okay so this is spooky... I need some help here.

I have had the alarm error 'Bonnet Open' fault for some time, the sensor on the boot is faulty and sometimes sets the alarm off so I give it a spray with WD40 and it's okay for a while.

I did the WD40 trick this just before I was driving to the airport last weekend as the alarm went off at random.

Whilst I was driving the 'whoosing' noise suddenly stopped... is this completely unrelated? or is there a hose for the Turbo / Intercooler under that section of the bonnet?

p.s the noise has now come back but did stop for about 150 miles!

I have the same noise developing and found a tear in the short rubber hose under the egr valve body.
Now I'm trying to locate a new one. It's a short rubber hose but land rover won't sell you the short part, instead want €177 plus vat to purchase the whole pipe down to the inter cooler on the drivers side.

Temp fix has been a piece of coke can, duct tape and several tie wraps and its holding for now.

Thank you, that is extremely helpful, I have booked it into the garage tomorrow to take a look.

Would a faulty hose cause a lack of power over time, just taken the car out and was down on power with a small jolt in 2nd gear at 20mph?

Yes it would and if the tear becomes quite large it will switch into limp home mode from what I can gather, i.e. Because the intake of air affects the readings with the sensors it powers down the engine to prevent damage. But also be aware you may be losing oil through the hole so keep an eye on your oil levels ok.

Sounds like that could be the issue, I will let the garage know so they don't waste too much time looking in the wrong place.

Not seen any oil leeks yet but they will check that out for me tomorrow.

You mentioned LandRover only sell the complete hoses, have you looked at aftermarket options, there were a few companies on eBay for about £50, I'm sure they would ship to Ireland.

Update just off the phone with Ian from our forum sponsors advancedfactors.co.uk, they do the replacement pipe for a very reasonable amount!
Unfortunately you can't buy the short piece (that I need) on its own but it's still a lot cheaper than what my local Landdrover dealership wanted.
My order going in shortly!

I dropped her off this morning at the garage and they have identified that one of the pipes is damaged and needs replacing.

Also had the Alarm fault saying 'Bonnet Open' so the drivers side latch and sensor is being replaces whilst they have the front of the car off.

Hello All,
Our Freelander 2 TD4 developed a whooshing noise but only when driving and under a heavy load or accelerating hard.

Yesterday I checked all the intercooler pipes at the front of the engine and all OK but dirty with oily/dusty deposits, so cleaned them up and tightened all the jubilee clips.
Today I got it up on axle stands and took the under engine cover off and found a 5cm split in the the turbo out hose, for location see pic below:

Have ordered part to be delivered late next week and will let you know if it cures it when fitted.

One question I have, it is still on the stands on our private drive, sitting very stable and not in the way for us, do any of you see any problem leaving it on the axle stands until the part arrive?
Cheers,
Mick

no problem at all assuming they are positioned correctly on the car, up to the load & not sinking into the drive surface. Thumbs Up 1978 Laverda Jota. Stolen...

Thanks littletriple!
I'm happy with positioning and drive is deep and solid so no worries on that score, just never left a car up on stands before and don't want to do any damage by ignorance Smile
