I've owned 2 FL2s (07 and 09) and the Outlander is on a par imho comfort wise but certainly not as nice as my later RRSs but it's been fault free and ridiculously cheap to run - I've wasted too much of my life arguing with LR dealers and LRCR to go back now Embarassed Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Thanks for the response Muddy - good to know things are still going well with the PHEV.

It is a car I would consider, I only drive a short distance to work so it would suit me well.
Problem is while the head says PHEV is the way to go the heart still says LR, and to be fair to my Freelander it has given no issues (touch wood) for the near 18 months I've owned it.
That said the fact I have a small petrol hatchback I can use for the short trips helps too, though not sure it makes sense to have the extra car while I do I make use of it.

Keep us up to date how things are going with the Mitsubishi, maybe the head will rule the heart at some point.

Just been having a look at the Mitsubishi Eclipse which has been advertised on TV recently. It's not quite for me but for a mid sized SUV with all of the toys, 1.5L petrol turbo for around £27k new it strikes me that this is exactly where Landrover needs to be positioning a vehicle. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto
Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE

A friend has an Eclipse first edition and a PHEV and he's very happy with both - me I prefer the PHEV Mr. Green

Personally I think Mitsubishi should offer the Eclipse as a PHEV then I'd be interested Thumbs Up

Finally got round to fitting a tow bar weekend now I'm sure it's staying - only taken 2 years to decide - I normaly change LRs by now but still got 3 years warranty remaining and the new version hasn't changed enough to tempt me Confused

Took a bit longer than I expected but surprisingly similar to the DS I did previously - underneath the components look very alike which I guess is because nobody really makes everything now and buys bits from others Rolling Eyes

I think the Outlander is a very interesting car, with a fully electric drive train, backed up by a reasonably powerful generator. (engine does drive the car directly in certain circumstances through a fixed gear)

During the time I was interested, Mitsubishi seemed to take notice of the comments being made about practicality and finish of the PHEV, and updated the styling, materials and controls over quite a short period.

The Outlander deserves to be considered as an out and out SUV, which happens have the ability to run from its battery, thus forgetting the hyper-mileage nonsense, and realising it's a real alternative to a diesel SUV. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

It certainly meets my needs now but admit it wouldn't of in the past -

When I towed a twin axle - I bought RRSs

When we needed 7 seats - I bought Discovery 2s

If you go off road the FL2/DS is probably more suitable on similar budget but as an all weather SUV for road use the PHEV is fantastic - it was better than the RRS on Snow in Feb Bow down

The first time I bought an LR from a dealer (a three-year-old 90, bought in 1990), they gave me the keys and gave my wife a bunch of flowers! This was before the ubiquity of supermarket flowers and a bunch of flowers in Glasgow in February was an impressive touch. Of course, nowadays the institutional sexism of this would be a bit more apparent - it was actually destined to be mainly her daily run around! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

That was before the ex VW general manager took over Shields, it went downhill from then now part of the Lookers group, so the sales side would have improved, no comment on the service side, especially if it is now the same as Taggarts also in the same group. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Not Shields but Gaulds, corner of Mosspark Boulevard and Paisley Road. I guess the fact that they were also the Rolls Royce dealer might have had a bearing on their attitude to customer service! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

My incompatibility with the local Mitsubishi Dealer is probably the reason that I am driving a FL2 now, and not an Outlander PHEV.

In the early days the PHEV was in short supply, and the dealers tended to make you feel that they were doing you a favour by letting you buy one (very much on their terms)

As it was a new kind of motoring I wanted to find out what it was like in the real world. Unfortunately I was only allowed to drive for about 10 mins around the edge of town. (I did in fact, accidentally??? take the wrong exit off a roundabout on the way back, this enabled me to do a couple of miles outside the 30 limit).

As the dealer wasn't that interested, I decided to give the PHEV a year or so to allow a normal market to get going.

I joined the PHEV forum and watched and learnt about the car from the owners. After about 18 months, I was still interested and went back to try again. I had already, by then, got a 32amp electric car charging point installed in my garage.

I was dealt with by a junior sales rep, who could not make any decisions, and I still could not get an extended test drive,

I pushed for an idea of the cost to me of changing to the PHEV. (part exchange, discounts, etc), and was told that until I had made a firm order no approximate prices could be discussed. I asked to talk to the sales manager direct. He eventually came out of his office, and explained that as the PHEV had a waiting list they were in no position to make a deal.

The whole dealership/garage did not seem that professional, compared with LR, or indeed Vauxhall with whom I had many years of exprience. It was as if they were surprised at the popularity of the PHEV, and did not know how to deal with it.

Some time later, I was lucky enough to find a LR Dealer, who dealt with me in an open and professional manner, and sold me my FL2 Metro.

One thing you will have to admit is Land Rover have the poshest biscuit with their courtesy coffee. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I won't bore you with the details of why after 16 years and 12 JLR vehicles I switched brands but my experience of Mitsubishi is a million miles away from yours Ian Shocked

We'd been out in a friends PHEV a few times and I had a DS which he kept taking the Michael about all the problems I was having so I searched on Google and top of the page was an advert for a New Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with £8.5k discount from a dealer within an hour of my home Confused

So rang them and was told no catch come in and test drive one which we did for the whole day unaccompanied. Did the deal that day and 2 weeks later picked up vehicle which wasn't preregistered or a demonstrator and haven't looked back.

I have my own business so accountant advised buy through that and got another £6k tax rebate

Only visited dealer once since for servicing which is covered by service pack for 3 years - we were dropped in city centre and spent day shopping then collected no dramas. Received a video that night of walk round vehicle by technician who carried out service with his name included and personal message from dealer principal asking me to ring his mobile if I was unhappy with anything - I also checked my dashcam later to see the test drive was done respectfully and obeying the speed limits - certainly beats seeing your RRS raced hell for leather or dropped off a ramp Rolling Eyes

I checked last week and wbac offered me £21k which now it's nearly 2 years old with 17k miles is pretty good imho Mr. Green Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

As I said, I think that I was unlucky
a) with the dealer, they have now switched to another make.
b) trying to be an early adopter, cars were in short supply, and any type of PHEV were rare.
c) Being a private (non Business) owner, the tax gains were negligible.

The Outlander PHEV is a very clever car, and now Renault-Nissan has taken over the reins I hope that they will be able to develop the idea fully. I am sure the powertrain is a contender for the future.
