A few things can cause that. The most common are:-

1 - Short journeys leaving the battery discharged (the function only works if the battery is topped up)
2 - Terrain response in anything other than normal road mode
3 - Demand for aircon by the climate control system
4 - High electrical demand - lights, heated windows etc

If none of those then more investigation needed.

Mine only works a couple of days a month. On the days that it does work, it tends to work every time. I think it's a common fault.

I don't see it as a big enough problem to spend money on at a Main Dealer, but if it's under warranty you may as well get it sorted.

This is exactly right. The battery needs to be right at full charge before the stop/start will work. I'm actually quite pleasantly surprised when mine does work. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

I've had my FL2 almost a year now, and only the other week after a full day of green laning with the engine running did the stop start work, first time for everything! It hasn't worked since like Whistle

I've suspected for sometime that it's a battery problem, but whilst it still starts without any problems I'll put up with stop / start not working

Would adding the second earth strap cure this?

I have a 2011 FL2 and the start/stop hasn't worked for over a year even after hooking up a ctek charger at one point. It suddenly started working this morning and has been consistent all day.

I regularly do near 200 mile journeys and despite this, the feature never worked. Last night I did the same journey, Sunderland to Cairnryan and the only difference to all the other journeys was that I had both front and rear fog lights on for quite a considerable time due to bad fog. I'm wondering has this drain on the battery started some type of calibration process for the start/stop system. As I said, despite numerous near 200 mile journeys, the feature never worked. All controls are the same, air con etc. Glad it's working as I was contemplating replacing the battery.

My stop start was flakey, worked in the summer, not winter. All cured when I got a new battery. Works almost all the time. One thing I noticed is that is your fan blower knob is turned up more than half way then the stop start doesn't work. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Only had the Freelander for a few weeks, and start stop has only worked a handful of times.

Despite a few 100+mile journeys.

Not really fussed about it actually working, but it intrigues me as to why it works everyso often. Having read through the manual I am not meeting any of the criteria for it not to work. (although I cannot be sure how good the battery charge is)

Glad its not just mine that is inconsistent. Very Happy Freelander 2 LE Sport - Largo Grey

We travelled to Plymouth from the NE, there and back @760 miles, parked in traffic often on the motorway, stop start didn't operate once until I pulled up on the drive to open the gate to our house when we got back!!!!!!!! Rolling Eyes

My stop start works all the time, even within 200 yards or so of starting and driving off. I have found that if the air con is full cold or working hard it won't work, or if the fan is turned up over 4. I am so used to it that when I get into the wife's Mini it seems odd that the car is still running when mine would have turned off.

Gav.
