Moving to Norfolk.. any recommendations?

Looking forward and making plans for five years time. Seriously considering moving away from the overcrowded southeast and to somewhere more rural and affordable.

I'll still want to work part-time so a reasonable commute to a big town is important. We'll also have two primary school age kids so good state schools are also important. Detached, non-estate, bit of land or at least a very large garden.

We've visited Norfolk a few times and always enjoyed the more relaxed pace of life, albeit we've always been on holiday there!

I'm thinking maybe a village within reach of Norwich and wondered if anyone had any views or recommendations? Budget will be circa £0.5M in current property prices.

I'd be really grateful for any advice.

Yes, I visited Wroxham just last week. Heart of The Broads and all that. Other than going on a boat I didn't really get a chance to look round. I imagine the locals must feel plagued by tourists and dare I say it.... caravanners.

Norfolk is the 'in' place at the moment, so expect lots of holiday homes and yuppies.

I would suggest you learn the language before moving there.

If you're not completely set on Norfolk, do consider Cornwall. We retired here five years ago and it's a wonderful place to live. One really good aspect of life here is that we incomers are made to feel welcome rather than a nuisance. Whatever you decide, when you get there join in with the community life of your adopted village. You will be pleasantly surprised by the sheer volume of things "going on" in rural areas.

Wherever you finish up, I hope things go well for you. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Mine - 2014 Vespa GTS 300 Super Sport Matt Black

It's definitely getting more expensive in Norfolk. Probably caused by outsiders like us wanting to move there. As for the accent - I'm originally from Gloucester.... Laughing

All great advice - thanks. We did actually look at Cornwall but were put off by comments about being forever treated as outsiders! Are there any areas you'd recommend, with reference to my OP?

As Cornwall is now full of incomers (and priced the locals out) Norfolk is getting to be 'Cornwall overspill'

It's difficult isn't it? With one or two exceptions it seems you get more for your money outside of the southeast. If you're selling up and moving out you're quids in, often similarly if you move to another country. The locals who are selling their houses cotton on and gradually prices push up. Capitalism in its most brutal form.

I sold a house in Brighton a few years back - when the estate agent told me the price I could achieve I was amazed. What to do? Tell him I'd only sell for 2/3rds of that price? In the event, every single buyer we had was from London - and all selling 1 bed flats which allowed them to buy a whole house in Brighton. It would have been lovely if a local had bought the house but I'd had to have dropped the price by £100k to let that happen. Crazy indeed.

I know it's south Norfolk, well north Suffolk really, but I have friends living in Gislingham who absolutely love it.

Lived in Naarfuk most of my adult life. It is getting quite pricey near the coast but if you're coming from the south east you should find like for like prices cheaper.

There are lots of nice places. Little Melton, Hethersett, Wymondham all close to Norwich. There are some lovely suburbs to Norwich too. But there are some areas that are a load of squit.

Drop me a PM with areas/things that are important to you and will give you the local steer.
