PAYG Mobile wifi question

I'm off to Spain on Wednesday and Italy in July and again in August and I need some kind of mobile data connection for our iPads and phones so I'm thinking of getting one of those Huawei Mobile Wi-Fi gadgets then getting a PAYG Three data sim which you can use abroad.

Anyone use one? I won't have time to order one online so need one that I can just buy instore tomorrow. Any other/different recommendations or advice anyone can give me? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I have one , I used it in France last year , it ate up data as I hadn't set it up to be abroad properly. If I was using it abroad again I would go into a 3 shop to get it set up . Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

How much data did you start with and what was your use? I was thinking of getting the 12Gb sim and using it for general browsing and what's app. I have an old 3G iPad - do you know if I could use the sim in that and tether the wife's iPad plus our two iPhones off that? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Also, if I get a 4G model, will it still work on 3G if 4G is not available? Will it use more data on 4g? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I started off with about 2gig I think, 2iphones & 2 iPads . As long as the mifi recived whatever phone company three uses abroad it converts that signal into wifi , three don't use 4g .
The app I used was threes , it's not really an app as it takes you to threes website. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

Not data but for phone coverage abroad in the past I have just gone to a local phone shop and bought a local PAYG SIM card to use in my phone. This strategy worked successfully in Uganda, Albania and then again in Kenya and was considerably cheaper than data roaming or using the 'preferred' company of my UK service provider.
May be worth a try - depends on how long you will be out there and mast coverage where you are going No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

That's news to me, I have a 3G mifi . I don't see what difference it makes if it's 3G or 4g , the mifi converts the signal into a local wifi hotspot . Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

Decided I wouldn't need 4G at any time as I wont be streaming films or gaming so I bought a 'Three' PAYG sim on my way to work this morning - 12GB, valid for 12 months for £30. Popped it in my old work 3G iPad and set up a personal hotspot that allowed my phone to work over it. Its all good but I don't want to lug this heavy iPad out there (we have iPad air 2 and iPad mini 4) so I have reserved one of these http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/phones-broadb...3-pdt.html that I will be picking up on my way home as its a bit smaller than my old iPad plus it can connect up to 10 devices to it. Decided on a sim free one as opposed one locked to 'Three' as other networks may bring out better deal Euro sims in the future plus I may be able to pop a better value local sim in. I just hope it all works when I get out there! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I used a huwai one in the house for a few weeks before my broadband suddenly got a lot better. worked fine outside but the house walls did stem the signal somewhat.

Doh! Just nipped out and bought mine. Plugged it in and linked my iPhone, iPad and PC up to it. All working fine - streamed the BBC on it. Speed acceptable - I only get 9 on my fixed line broadband so 7 aint too sad. Good enough for what I'll need - assuming its okay in Spain and Italy. We'll see!

Got a Huawei on 3 I use in france if you dont stream movies the data lasts quite well we used 11/2Gig in a week with 3 phones (teenagers)
If you get a 4g one it will default to 3g if thats all the coverage there is.
Shop about for the sim, a lot cheaper pre loaded of the bay than either direct or topping up from 3 and make sure you get into the menu and enable international roaming.
Having proved it just looking at a 10 or 20 gig card to last all summer.
