New owner - not too good so far!

Unfortunately, not a good start to FL2 ownership for me.
I bought the car just under two weeks ago after being very impressed during the test drive. Once I'd picked it though, the 'Engine system failure' light came on and the car occasionally went into limp mode.
This was rectified by fitting a new throttle body (plastic gears stripped), but found that the EGR was also sticking. The car was still functional though, and the independent specialist I'm using said he'd order one for me.
After going out in the car on Friday evening (no problems), the car wouldn't start on Saturday morning. Several times it just fired momentarily and then cut out.
After trying to start it several times I called the RAC. They came out and also failed to get it going. They said that the display control module was immobilising the engine and that I'll need to notify the garage on Monday morning, then they'll take the car there.
I'm really hoping to get this sorted very soon, as the car is lovely to drive when it goes properly.
My two previous cars were a Rover 75 diesel that got wrote off at trouble free 180,000 miles and a MG ZT that I've just given to my son with 220,000 miles on it and still going strong.

sounds like you bought it privately without a warranty?

hopefully your independent knows his stuff and is reasonable.

Perhaps a chat with the previous owner might reveal something?
If they say no never had a problem all the time they had it then its probably just one of those one off things that can be easily fixed.
If they say it was the reason they got shut of it because there was always a problem occurring then it could prove to be a bad buy?

I bought it from a car dealer along with a 12 month warranty (of which I have to contribute a percentage of any repairs due to its age/mileage). I'll no doubt find out pretty soon if the warranty is worth the paper it's written on!

I suspect the previous owner got rid due to it being an existing problem, as they'd just forked out for a clutch and DMF 3,000 miles ago. Probably just decided to get rid before they have to spend more on it.

Although it's got issues at the moment, I'm still hopeful I can get them resolved, as I really enjoy driving it when it goes well.

Seems like you have some electrical connection/connector problems. Wouldn't be surprised if the faulty one was disconnected/reconnected a few times the fault would go. Trouble is, where to start? I'm no expert, but there are a bunch of connectors in the base of the passenger 'A' pillar that can give rise to strange symptoms. Most likely some drivers side too but I have not looked there.

Strange the new throttle body fixed those first symptoms. Normally the stripped gears you found only give rise to some noises and poor shudder on shutdown. Otherwise OK.

Good luck in getting it sorted. They are great cars. Do come back and tell us what it was!

Hi Bob, I'll certainly post any findings on here. I know only too well from other forums how frustrating it can be when someone posts issues with their car and doesn't post the outcome, often after loads of help from forum members.

Unlikely to be of help. They will almost certainly say that it was OK when they had it. A couple of cars ago my local indie, who serviced my FL1 was called up by a prospective buyer and asked what they thought about my old car. They said that it looked OK when they last serviced it but they always recommend an independent inspection and would never make any other comment in case they got sued. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I can see why a repairer would say that, but as an owner, I'd be happy to say something like "yes it was having a string of problems so I traded it in". Different matter if selling privately?
Actually happened to me with a Fl1 - out of the blue a dealer rang me and asked about the history because it was still registered in my name. This was the one I'd given back at the end of the lease, and the lease company parked it up for a couple of years, lost all the paperwork then sold it as "low mileage". Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

The 75 & ZT certainly served me well over the last 14 years. Hopefully I'll get this one sorted and it'll be just as dependable. I can only hope at the moment!.

Got the car back on Friday evening - all seems well at the moment, although I expect that it'll be a while before I have any great confidence in it.
The EGR valve had failed to the point of not allowing the engine to start. A new EGR has been fitted and the car drives really well. Here's hoping I'll get quite a few miles without bother now!.
