Just looking at the size of the UK Toyota Land Cruiser having realised it's not as big as the "Amazon" version sold in some other markets....

The UK Land Cruiser is 1885mm wide (mirrors in), 4780mm long in 5 door version (3 door is 4335mm).

The Freelander is 2005mm wide (mirrors in), 4500mm long.

The Discovery is 2022mm wide (mirrors in), 4829mm long.

The Discovery Sport is 1894mm wide (mirrors in), 4599mm long.

So the UK 5 door Land Cruiser is slightly narrower than both the Freelander and the DS and only 181mm longer than the DS (gaining adult friendly +2 seats). Its 37mm narrower than the Discovery and 39mm shorter.

The UK 3 door Land Cruiser actually has a smaller footprint than the Freelander! Who'd have thought it?

Back in the 1980's Japanese cars used to be taxed on their physical size, which is why the Rover 800 (Honda Legend) was very narrow. I wonder if that's still the case and the reason for the Land Cruiser being a bit anorexic?

To be honest I have only ever been in my son's LandCruiser in Botswana which seemed enormous with it's 4.2 litre diesel. It even had a fridge in between the front seats that was deep enough to put upright wine bottles in and still have room for stuff on top. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

That would be the larger "Amazon" version and yes, that really is massive ocean liner size. Even the UK Land Cruiser (might be called the LC Prado in some markets) feels bulky but I was surprised that the dimensions are actually within reason.

I'd be interested to know what you think if you get a chance to pop into a Toyota dealership? The main thing that holds me back is that the Freelander is nicer to drive on road, and not needing the serious off road capability...

I'm afraid I won't be popping into a Toyota dealership anytime soon. The Landcruiser is probably a great car if you live in the Middle East but for over here I would take the Disco, all day long.

I'm a big fan of the Disco, always have been, slightly underwhelmed by the new one but I'll keep the faith until I drive it. The Main reason I had Fl2s was they were a ideal size for the dog and someone who spends most of the time in the car on their own and still retain the LR feel, something I didn't get with the DS. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Zermatt Silver

I know someone who bought the Landcruiser as a shooting car 5 years ago It has performed brilliantly and has never got stuck. I think the decision to buy one could be great if you are going to use it. Like a lot of 4x4 vehicles it is overkill in the UK for 95% of the year if you are using it as a road only car. Also bear in mind a 2.8 litre diesel in real life traffic is going to struggle to hit 25 MPG , tax will be high and diesel ownership is the new target for crucifixion by the department of Beatrix Potter and Bunny Hugging.

Ps the width on the cars that matters is door card to door card Thumbs Up 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Listening to radio 4 this morning I can categorically state the 4x4 using a diesel engine is doomed anywhere near our clogged up cities. Rolling Eyes

Yes it's looking that way, either we end up with horrendously expensive and complex DPFs and control systems on diesels or we move to petrol. I can see that in a few years time finding a diesel pump will be like finding 4 star petrol pumps which gradually faded out however by then we will be increasingly driving electric cars. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Then it'll be the turn of petrol powered cars, again.

Then we will be heavily charged for charging our electric cars because the governments not getting enough of our hard earned cash.

I'm not too worried I never drive into the city, plenty of P&R sites, £5.40 return but free for me. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
