EGR Blanking - ALL HERE

EGR Blank or Not To EGR Blank that is the question?

Should I blank it off or should I not blank it off?

What do I have to gain and lose?

I have been doing a little research but what does everyone do?

im after the same info too buddy.

I know it depends on the MY of your FL2 though as to whether it is viable or not

MY11 and onwards cars are not so easy to blank, but pre-MY11 can be blanked with a simple plate costing less than £5. The EGR system is intended to reduce NOx emissions, but it is quite difficult to find reliable figures on just how effective it is in practice.

I have blanked my EGR, with the pros and cons as I understand it being:

Cons
====

    Increased NOx emissions - NOx is mainly a problem in cities where there are many vehicles causing a build up. Since I live and drive almost entirely in rural areas I don't regard NOx as a major issue - for those who drive regularly in cities it should be regarded as more important.

Pros
===

    Feeding exhaust gases into the engine does the engine no good at all, resulting in increased wear, degradation of the oil, etc. In the case of the FL2 it has also been suggested that the heat of the recirculated gas contributes to the failure of the swirl flaps, which can in turn cause severe damage to the engine.

    EGR increases particualte emissions - the introduction of DPFs is partly due to the increase in particualtes caused by EGR!

    Fuel consumption is slightly improved

    Engine is slightly more responsive at medium power settings where the EGR is operating

is the NOx emissions increase the only downside ? (I also live in a semi rural area with most driving on the A1)

are there any detrimental effects on the engine components? wear/tear, damage, extra stresses...........

Hi

I'm evaluating "how to" blank the FL2 EGR: in my other diesel cars I had only benefits in killing this valve...no MIL, no soot problems, cleaner engine.

I think I'll try with the blanking plate ( with a hole, so not a 100% blank ) that I've found in Ebay but I'm not totally sure where to put it: I don't like to much to stop the exhaus gas after the valve, just before the throttle body.
I'd prefer to put the plate before the cooler, on the exhaust manifold: so I'll keep the EGR cleaner and prevent the stuck.

I'm also searching a DIY way to disable the EGR from the ECU but I'm not really experienced with this matter...

The informations I have ( after several searches on the web):

models Pre 11 without DPF = easy to blank without ECU mods
models Pre 11 with DPF = easy to blank using a plate with hole ( restrictor) and PROBABLY without ECU mods
models Post 11 = ECU model changed from EDC15 to EDC16 so NEEDS to have a remap.

The engine can take a little longer to warm up, as it's getting cold air in place of hot exhaust, so I suppose that could cause increased wear if you do a lot of very short journeys. But I've not found warm-up to be a problem and the effects on the engine are basically all good.

I agree with Pab... a engine that beath "air" from the EGR is somewhat like you breath your own fart...I really don't see any benefits to do this...

cheers Pab. Cold start up isn't really an issue in England I don't reckon as temperatures don't dip below freezing very often for very long. (plus I have heated seats Very Happy )

where is the best place to get a blank plate from (im guessing ebay) and which one to go for ?

Ebay, yes. I think this is the one I used:

Both plate and seller were fine. In fact iirc I ordered it in the evening and it arrived next day!
