Bike carriers.

Whats the 2 bike carrier of choice with Forum users? I have a tow bar fitted, so was wondering which is the best for the shape/size of the F2?

I bought one of ebay, 3 bike carrier mounted on the tow bar, works perfectly well for £18 Thumbs Up

only downside is that you cant open the boot with it fitted, but once the bikes are off it only takes 30 secs to remove it.

dependant on a couple of things i.e type of towbar and will you want to tow at same time as carrying bikes

Something like the bolt on style will allow you to tow at same time (some models do anyway)

I use a Thule Clamp on 3 bike towbar mount one and have no issues with it Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

let me think about that........... hundreds of pounds for either of those set ups or £18 + £15 for a light board from Hellfrauds............

does the same job for me but then I try to be tight to leave more money for modding my FL2 Laughing

i'm tempted to go roof mounted soon as I may need a roof box, some wise words of a mate said to me one day, better to have £3k of mountain bike on the roof, that the towbar for some numpty to rear end you and write the bike off and the car

but then I think I use underground carparks Confused Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

get the roof mounted rack that holds the bike upside down then when you go into an underground or multi storey car park the bike wheels will just roll Laughing

I had the roof mounted racks last year on my last FL2 and even though im 6'3'' and my son is 6'6'' we still struggled to get the bikes up there and locked in place.

I dont have roof rails or roof bars, so I'm looking at one to fit on the tow hitch. I had roof bars on my last F2, and used to put them on the roof, but I also had side steps which helped, but not on this one. (I hated the side steps to be honest).

All depends on price. I would advise against a roof mounted as I went under a height restriction in a new Mini Cooper s, trashed the 2 k bike and compressed the roof pillers almost writing the car off. Get a rack where you can see the bike so you know it is still attached. Also I jarred my back a few times with the roof mounted, you need a third hand when it's windy. I have used my atera strada hundreds of times now and it operates as new still. But for two bikes you may wish to spend less.

As well as my mountain bike we have two e-Bikes (getting on you know) which are heavier than your average bike so I use this beasty which is a doddle to load/unload and allows access to the tailgate when needed (Thule 9152)

A post below that I put on Disco3 earlier this morning for someone looking for a high mounted one.
Apart from the benefits listed below, it's easy to put on/take off and doesn't need a towbar or lightbar.
It's now fitted to the FL2 and because it sits slightly lower [as the FL2 isn't as tall] I add a number plate on top of the bike.

This is the bike rack I cobbled up from my dad's old 'paddy hopkirk' one [on my old D3].
I can fit it to most vehicles, but only carry just the one light mountain bike on it.
Been adapting/using it for 20yr+, it's rock solid and never let me down.
Looks sh!te, so nobody would want to steal it.
[though it is tethered to the bodywork in this pic & when I feel it's vulnerable with the bike locked on it].

As mentioned, could tow the caravan easily when it was fitted, and still access the tailgate [even with bike on].

FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

I use a Bak Rak and fix a couple of roof mount type bike holders to it - has the advantage that I can adapt the Bak Rak as needed for other carrying jobs where I don't want what I'm carrying in the FL with me - particularly if it's a bit smelly or dirty! They do a range of adapters and convertors too so you can fix flange type accessories on a swan neck etc - the spare wheel carrier looks useful if you want more than one spare and the "winch in a box" is quite tempting......http://www.bak-rak.com/winchinabox.htm FL No 1 - 2012 (MY2011) XS manual Firenze Red - Gone
