Last of the Defenders

It's the end of an era tomorrow, the last Defender will come off the production line.

I sort of wish we'd never sold our Td5 Crying or Very sad

The end of an era

Today sees the very last Land Rover Defender roll off the production line after 68 years. I love my Freelander but the Defender is my favourite car of all time. Rather sad. Big Cry

Somehow can't see them making a proper replacement. My farmer brother in law has a short wheel base Defender and he can throw bales or dead calves or anything in the back and trundle across fields. He thinks that his next vehicle will be a Jap pickup which will be bigger, carry a tonne and be more comfortable and economical. I just don't think that JLR are in this market. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Odd thing this morning, the news on Radio 4 and Classic FM both had reports about the last Defender being produced today. On ClassicFM it was followed by a Mitsubishi advert, I cant say I had noticed them advertising before - sounds like the vultures are gathering. Shocked 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Sad day, prices are getting stupid on all defenders now!

I was working on Disco 2 in '95 and use to visit Solihull. and regrettably missed walking the Classic RR line, before they stopped production.

I did like the nod to the first landrover with the reg H166 HUE.

Having worked for the "electricity board" ( mines now called UK Power Networks) for 33 years I've always been around series 3/110/defenders. We had a brand new A reg 110 in our depot when I started in 83. We got our last 4 in our area last year on 15 plates, all 130 cherry pickers. We've now got some 65 reg Hilux and D-max cherry pickers and they just look like they'll fall apart after 3 years.

We never did use disco's in any great number except for a fleet of 4 P reg 300 tdi 4 door base models which were equipped with high voltage fault location equipment. It didn't last as the disco's got eventually got replaced by big transits ( great across a field !!! management were stupid) I'm currently trying to track down some photos of these discos. They were white and pretty certain the were P ??? NPW or NVF in case any member has ever known of a disco with such a reg.

Apart from one or 2 field engineers having Freelanders these have never been a mainstram electricity board vehicle, although we do have a lot of new Rangers, 1 of which I drive and am very impressed with

Back to defenders, I should never have sold my 1987 E reg 90, Bought it in 2007 but only kept ir a year.

I can remember this 110 coming to the depot brand new, it went my workmate while I got a T4 transporter. It pulled me out of a field many times !! This pic was taken the day it left the fleet with over 150K on it.

And this is the last of the line....

I remember looking through the accessories catalogue for Defenders where you could get things like Riot Shields and armour plating kits and the most amazing add ons. However I have just had a look on the JLR website and Defender accessories are all about lifestyle. Says it all really. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Demise of the Defender and the Freely2 are just about the end of the line for me.
Tried for a new D4 as it is the only vehicle left in the line-up which might appeal. List price seems reasonable for an SE but when I tried to spec it the only ones left to build are blinged up tart carts with absurd price tags.
The opening description of the D4 says it all - it is "Styled to turn heads"......"One of the world's most premium SUVs"....
Key features are - I kid you not - "Grill bars in dark atlas or "Narvik". FFS!!!
The options and accessories lists have nothing of any practical utility for hard work - just loads of electronic toys - "In control Apps" and such like dross.

A sad adieu to both vehicles and a feeble withdrawal by LR from the very markets which built the brand.

Can't get an SE any more, my one is one of the last. I've done the bling but came back to where it began for me. My first LR was a bog standard blue 7 seat D3 and my current one which might be my last LR, a bog standard SE D4, well not quite standard I pushed the boat out and added privacy glass and xenons.

68 years of history gone and never to be repeated, my dealer had a heritage model and it was sold before its wheels had a chance to hit the showroom floor.

Will just have to make do with the Jeep Wrangler 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
