Can I ask how you guys are connecting to the car? I guess you're plugging in a laptop or similar. But where? Are you going in through the OBDII port or through the USB port?
I ask because I want to find a way of "seeing" the satnav hard drive so that a newer map set can be installed. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Hi Blacktiger,

I think we are all using one of the many Land Rover VCI (Vehicle CAN Interface) adapters along with the genuine Land Rover SDD (Symptom Driven Diagnostics) software. I have a Diagnostics Associates one.

You may want to go and read up about USB and the differences between there modes, especially HOST. Some devices are masters, some are slaves and some can be both. The USB port in the car is a host and can only accept slaves such as pen drives. You can not connect directly to another host such as a PC.

When you plug in your Garmin to your PC, the Garmin is the slave and the PC is the host. The PC changes the files in the Garmin to update the sat nav, the Garmin is effectively a giant pen drive.

Thanks Vanny. So if/when you connect using that stuff can you get into the satnav? MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

No, you cannot access the SAT NAV hard drive diagnostically, if that's what you are asking.

When you plug the USB update stick into the car, the data is very slowly transferred from USB to INFOTAINMENT to SATNAV. I suspect the data is cached to the SAT NAVs drive before it is installed. The USB update sticks also have a unique key which is destroyed at the end of the update process, so you can only use the stick on a single vehicle.

I'm afraid there isn't a fast way to by pass the update process on the USB/HDD SAT NAV system.

Damn and blast. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry I suspect it's a similar sort of "unlock code" that Garmin uses.

Oh well. Back to the drawing board.........and my tomtom and Garmin. They must realise that anyone with any sense is going to buy a Garmin Nuvi (with lifetime map updates) for Ł100 instead of paying Ł170 for their update. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Camera On The Move/Surround Camera System

This has been a baffling one to be honest and this is the progress report in activating the reverse camera whilst on the move.
Today I was able to successfully bring up the option on the touchscreen albeit a little more work to be done.

I now have the option to select rear camera view whilst traveling forward. Currently when I select this option I get a blank screen, this is because the module for generating the image, The Camera Imaging Module, is not currently connected. It could also be that I haven't activated another field necessary to facilitate this operation, as i said, a little more work to be done.

EDIT; Since using the “Rear Camera” feature for a while and doing a little more reading the rear camera softkey is working. Only gives access to the rear camera for 5 seconds and then the BCM sends a CAN signal to close down the camera. This is a safety feature courtesy of LR🙄 hence why the touchscreen feed goes blank. But by simply touching the touchscreen it goes back to PDC overlay screen. Whilst I’m in reverse I can toggle between the 2 using the “Rear Camera” softkey.
I’m hoping once I’ve connected the IPMB for the proximity camera system that this will allow the rear camera to be activated for longer than the fixed camera IPMB which my research seems to indicate.

To return to the PDC Park Assist Screen you simply tap the touchscreen.

I didn't have time today to get any further but next step is to start activating all the camera feeds. This is easier said then done as there are many camera systems in the CCF for different platforms, infotainment, Venture Cams etc. I think I have identified the ones for my activation but it's a bit of a try and see exercise. We still need to do a fair amount of work on this one as there are many fields but I'm glad we've finally made a breakthrough on this as its been a real head scratcher. Also a bonus is that the RRS has the same external wing mirrors so easy retrofit for side camera's and the others are easy.

We also made another discovery regarding PDC System and the touchscreen which I'm over the moon about as it was part of the functionality of the system I'd really wanted. I'll explain below. MY15

PDC Alert Screen Auto Activation

Today was able to activate the PDC Alert Screen to auto activate when going from "R" to "D". This means that whilst the PDC system is active, up until 16km/h, the touchscreen will display reverse camera in "R" and then automatically revert to PDC Alert Screen without having to reactivate "PDC alert screen" from dash to reactivate the touchscreen display. Whilst active I have the option to cancel display from the touchscreen or the whole PDC system from the dash switch.

Reverse Camera active whilst in "R" on first point turn into my residence,

Select "D" and reverse camera extinguishes and Park Aid Alert Screen auto activates without using dash activation switch.

This is very handy for me as I need to do a 2 point turn to reverse into my residence from a narrow inner city ROW, (reverse dip memory mirrors are a godsend!!!!)
It also means that when you are shuffling into a parking spot, even though the PDC system is active, you don't need to press the dash activation switch to re engage Park Aid Alert screen when going forward, GOLD!

I first came across this when I had an Evoque but when I had a Discovery Sport it was the same as the Freelander 2. I'm guessing this is a Land Rover v Range Rover thing.

I also discovered that Land Rover had a bulletin out about this and an "auto activation" of the PDC system from below 16km/h due to many complaints from owners. This involved pressing the PDC Dash Activation Switch for 3 seconds to toggle between "auto activation" of PDC system below 16km/h and manual activation via switch. LED on PDC switch will flash to indicate change in operation.

Be warned, I've tried this and got a PDC system failure warning on the touchscreen and to see a dealer. I was able to rectify by doing a complete module reset of both CAN's. I will give this method another go now that the CCF edit has been done to see if this works and was part of the bulletin change, which I haven't been able to source to date.

Been using the PDC system all day today and all I can say is it is sooooo much better!
Seamlessly flicking from rear camera view to overall PDC overlay and staying active until 16km/h.
It's now how it should have been from the beginning and not a "dumb'd down" system just so the proper functionality can be reserved for higher end models. Rolling Eyes MY15

Wow, that's some seriously good progress there Stuart.

If you get everything possible working, are you going to stick RR badges on Very Happy

I think your next task should be massage seats. I'd really like massage seats . . .

two, or three? Two gives kerb/nose view but I think the latest cars have a dead ahead camera (don't quote me on that)

Can you hook up wing mirror and rear cameras and end up with the over head view like on the Range Rover?

You would be amazed how useful and accurate that is!

I think the newest system has done away with two at the front and only has a single.
Because the Freelander 2 shares wing mirrors with similar vintage RRS wing mirror proximity mirrors are easy swap, just leaves two cameras in front bumper which is similar fixing method as PDC sensors.
Uses same rear camera except change of part number as the rear camera has a LIN connection to IPMB instead of CAN.
Wiring is also very straight forward, simple actually.... MY15
