We've already had some snow up in the Pennines, and come Jan/Feb I can pretty much guarantee there will be more. On Sunday I passed a 3-car pile-up in slushy rain on the M6 and a car in a hedge on the A69. A bit of height makes all the difference, and it's good to know I've got the extra security of the winters!

It was 12 degrees when I left for work at 6am in the Derbyshire Dales, on the boarder of the peak district..

It,ll change, they dont forecast the weather until the MET guy gets up and look out of the window in the morning and change what he said the day before.
We do need a jolly good freeze up as it kills all the pests, otherwise they just keep reproducing.

Better money is spent on a pair of tyre socks like Autosocks.

I have a pair in the boot in case of a bad winter.

At £60 quid or so they are excellent value and it doesn't mean shelling out on new rubber when the winter soft tyres run out (wow v expensive !!).

Tyre socks are brilliant, used them on BMW before and in very bad extreme ice conditions they make the difference between moving and not moving at all, better than that you can actually drive off in a controlled manner and manage up hills in compacted snow which is glassy shiny.

See internet for reviews the Germans rated them very highly, some reviews above snow chains !

Had a few mornings of ice + snow up here, and on my travels.

Yes, they were expensive, but will see me for the next 3 years, as well as extending the life of my summer wheels (which are, ironically, fitted with winter tyres )

Anyone tried the Michelin Easy Grip Composite Snow Chains ?

They're like elastic bands joined together ... but looks as tho' v. effective ... any views ?

Even now with the weather unseasonably warm, the nighttime temperatures are well below 7 degrees. So if you're driving at night the winter tyres are still a good safety feature. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

We had some terrible ice and snow over the last few months seeing many cars and vans struggle to get up our dirt track. The Landy had no issues at all with winters on. What it would have been like with normal tyres on I don't know but at least I know it'll get me where I need to go (often with another car hooked on the back) Learned to drive in 2011.

May have been the warmest winter but also one of the wettest and below 7 degrees c is when winter tyres make sense - Even down ere in pasty land it has been below 3 degrees several days last week in the early mornings so my winters are staying on for a while yet. Have Blizzacs on Civic and Jazz and they are great - but the Nokian Weatherproofs on the Freely2 have been excellent - their grip in the wet is exceptional and Mam was able to try them out in the muddy field at Buconnic yesterday - very very grippy when slippy. Think they may stay on all year.

Bocconnoc was a sea of mud but - as my Nokians are still on - also no problems whatsoever. Have been amazed at how good they are - quiet, grippy, sure footed in the wet (just as well down here). Ironically, having first bought them in preparation for the winter of 2014 (which, of course meant we didn't have one, just like this year) I was seriously thinking about selling them (+ the wheels) as they are still virtually unused and soon, I fear, the "Freely" may have to go if I'm successful in "downsizing" my house and move closer to town. If I don't move, maybe running them all year might be the preferred option.
Hope your Mam enjoyed the CGS "do" - they never seem to get the weather right - but some cracking plants.
