United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Indus Silver
The Chronicles of Bibendum's Freelander

We are 10 days into Freelander ownership and all is good so far.

1,000 miles (including 300 with the tin tent on the back) and a bit of fun too.

The FL2 tows the caravan better than my D2 - which was a surprise. I do miss the seats in the Volvo V40 though, not that the FL2 seats are bad, just that the Volvo ones were superb.

Here's to some adventures together.........

I was surprised to be honest.

Bearing in mind I have a 1.5t single axle caravan, the FL2 is faster, smoother, and more stable. This last bit was the biggest shock and I put down to the FL2 having a longer wheelbase and a shorter overhang at the rear reducing the length of the tow bar lever arm.

The FL2 is a bit more economical with the van on. 22-24 mpg for the FL2 vs 20-22 mpg for the D2 - but that wan't a surprise.

Obviously the D2 could tow more but in BibendumWorld I don't need that capability.

I've been used to towing big trailers with both a D2 & D3 so it's good to know that the freelander tows well. That seems quite low mpg, is yours a manual or auto?

It's a Manual - but those figures are with the 1.5t caravan on from Yorkshire over the Pennines to the Lake District and back.

Running solo I get about 40mpg from the FL2. With the D2 was lucky to get 30mpg

There's a big difference when you're towing the 'van! My disco2 was manual and solo the most I'd get would be 26mpg and towing 2t I'd get about 19/20mpg on a steady run. The disco3 is auto and the most I've had doing a steady 60mph is 28mpg. I've never measured mpg when towing.........I'm too scared Rolling with laughter I'm looking forward to better economy with a freelander Mr. Green

My FL2 has an mpg of about 35.7 according to the trip computer, mine is a manual. I did not notice much difference when towing my Abbey GTS 418, but I have not done much towing this year, as I changed my van but I am away next week to Wales so will check then.

Really? That's very good. What sort of van is it?

Were you on the Caravan Club site near the castle?
