SD4 Starting Problem

i am having trouble starting my SD4 in a morning i press the button and it turns over twice then stops i press the button a second time it turns over and stops 4 to 5 times then starts could the diesel be running back over night i have had new glow plugs and a new fuel filter so now i am puzzled and so is my Garage anyone got any idea the problem is worse in cold weather

On my Son's TD4, the exact same scenario was caused by a faulty Cam position senor. This went on for quite a while with several attempts to fix the problem by 2 different LR dealers but it was a very switched on LR assist guy that came out to the car who identified the problem.

I have recently had a similar issue. Mine is a MY11 SD4 also and eventually resulted in the dreaded " Reduced Engine..." Etc. I booked it into my local LR garage (Strarstone Nottingham) where they diagnosed a split EGR pipe. £450ish later, car back and purring like a kitten.

I only noticed in the subsequent days after the fix that I had more power available than the weeks running up to the final breakdown. Symptomatic of a little split getting worse and worse. If you are heading back to the garage it is well worth getting this checked too.

We have a similar problem , I've been told by garage that I need a new starter motor , as it will only turn over 3 times and stops, mine isn't the sd4' it's a 2008 td4 2.2 , don't want to put a stater on it if it's not the problem, I've asked if it's low battery volts but he says it's not, he says the starter is taking to much volts from battery at cranking ? Please put your fix up when you get it sorted please thanks I find so may post where the fix answer hasn't been posted

As I said, in the case of my Son's TD4 it was the Cam position sensor. It didn't always generate a fault code though and prior to the correct diagnosis being made it had a new battery, glow plugs, inlet manifold and manifold flap actuator. All under warranty.

The car would crank, fire causing the starter to disengage and then stall. this could be 3 times or 33 times. but only in low temperatures. My understanding is (from the workshop manual) that the sensor is only used by the system to identify camshaft position on engine starting, once the engine is running the system then ignores the signal and relies on the crank position sensor.

I am told the cam sensor becomes brittle and cracks (not always visible) then when the temperature drops they don't function as intended.

I was also advised this is a very common problem on the Diesel X type Jaguar.

Here's the DTC on the day the LR assist guy finally sussed it.
