being pestered by local dealship 3 times in 2 weeks your pads 45% worn disks look rusty...!!!
(they always look rusty if parked up for 2 day,s till I drive it (think they are short of workshop work and trying to instill fear to have them changed )

Were the mud is thicker, and the ruts are deeper.

I think the minimum is 3mm,it's becoming standard practise to change discs at same time as pads,got mine from Eurocarparts online think it was about £300 all round they had an offer on at the time but they usually do

Forgot to say they were a pretty easy job to do too.

I have recently replaced the front pads on my 2011 SD4, at approx 70,000miles.
They were down to 2-3mm, which as has been said, is the recommended minimum thickness.

I did notice that the feel of the brakes had started to "drop off" -they had lost the initial bite, and we're feeling a bit "dead".

As said, very easy straightforward job (luckily had access to a lift, which made it more pleasant...)

-oh, and the discs were fine.

The early asbestos-free pads were very aggressive to discs, but I have found that they are better these days.
-just my subjective view...

The "old rule" was, friction material getting close to thickness of metal backing plate. All FL2's (3) Gone
