my (manual) gearlever has started to make a squeeking noise - when changing from neutral to 1st or 2nd gear - meaning movement towards the left hand side

Does anyone know how to remove the gear lever cover - so I can get some lubrication down there ?


(PS I tried the CG method with a sledge hammer - but there was not enough space to get a good swing.... )

Then you need an air impact chisel that should force its way in

At the rear of the gaiter, push it downwards and you will feel the edge of the plastic surround through the gaiter.
Now just pull straight up, and the plastic surround will come away from the push fit retaining clips. You'll then be able to work the surround backwards away from the dashboard.

You can disconnect the terrain control cable at this point to give you better access.

i read that somebody saw a tech. remove the cover by a sharp tug, but they didn't see what direction or judge the ammount of force needed.

Is there anything in the LR ownersinfo website?

The squeaking from the gear lever (mine also had a rubbery feel) is a known problem. I understand that in the past a new cable was fitted but now the solution is to use some special lubricant imported from Japan. My car had the work done last Thursday and the work was done by a Land Rover engineer as this fix as so new.

So I would not try and fix it yourself but get the dealer to sort out.
