Aussie advice on 4x4

Just had a phone call from my brother, he's been offered a job in Perth and wants to buy a second hand 4x4 for moderate off road use. Sounded me out about Freelanders but I'm not sure about price, service backup etc. in that neck of the woods,
So all you Aussies, what do you recommend? Did warn him that he would get conflicting info on various models but any thoughts would be appreciated.
PS He's flying out on 10th August. 11 GS Bali Blue

Plenty of service, independant and main available Metro and rural.
There's only one main dealer who'd I avoid as I've experienced really bad customer service and would avoid as I do, PM me and I'll tell you who this is. I have a really great independant aswell who'd I'd trust my "first born man child" to! Laughing
There's a reasonable choice of second hand FL2's both diesel and petrol. Si6 more than Si4 as by this point the diesel was far more popular. Petrol cheaper here than in UK so choosing a Petrol over a diesel won't be as big of a shock for you I'm
guessing and you'll probably will pick up an Si6 much cheaper than the diesel equivalent as the petrol models don't hold their value as well. Si6 was available up to HSE spec but Si4 only available in SE Spec on release as Diesel sale were far more popular by this time.
Shogun, called "Pajero" here is ok, but cheap and unsophisticated. Really depends on what you want. You will pay a premium choosing an FL2.
Most FL2 sold here are of a high specification so if your looking for a basic model they are few and far between and only available as an S Ed4 which are pretty rare here.
In short if you want a Land Rover there's no problem! MY15

Oh and Btw if your setting you heart on a manual FL2 then prepared to be dissapointed as they are super rare. I think
the early SI6 was only available as a "special forward order" and the later model only in
S Ed4 base model. Majority are auto's, manual very unpopular and if you do manage to find one it will be a bargain!
This also goes for most other marques.
As a Brit coming to Australia, Ausust is the end of Winter and most likely very mild for you but come December be prepared for 35 - 40 degrees, low humidity so if you don't have an affected vehicle a/c you'll die! Happy to report Fl2 A/c excellent in
Our climate but not all marques cope as well. Personal experience with VW would caution against this choice and if you are buying second hand or even new then this is a priority choice unless you enjoy sitting on a 60 degree plus vehicle in summer. MY15

Also be prepared how cold it can be here. All my relatives from northern Europe have complained of the cold!

Mitsubishi Pajero (Shogun), are very common, very reliable, reasonably priced, have lots of accessories available, good on fuel and capable off road. Toyotas have the best credibility out here, Land Rovers have none by most people unfortunately. The Pajeros come with a standard 5 year warranty with 10 years on the drive train. Most Jap cars have been hit with the ugly stick though. Pajero means Censored in Spanish, hence why they changed the name for the rest of the world.

My mechanic I been using for over 2 decades told me to get a Toyota, Honda was his second choice. I ignored him, he knows I bought a Land Rover!

He said a Toyota, not necessarily for reliability, it's just that they are everywhere so if you have problems out in the sticks things are going to be a bit easier. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

That may be the case.

The problem here is long distances.

Everyone is driving Toyotas so there are spare parts everywhere ready to be fixed. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

As much as I love Land Rover's there is a well know saying/joke in Aus as you guys may already know. "Only two cars will cross the Austrailian desert a Land Rover and a Land Cruiser! If you want to come back alive take the Land Cruiser" Rolling with laughter

LR's reliability has come on leaps and bounds and the FL2 is the most reliable vehicle LR have made till date. Which is LR's own claim.

Personally I'd still take my chances in the LR

Think you mean Sh*tsubishi Rolling with laughter

Sh*tsubishi give me nightmares till this day. At the time my dad had bought a new D1 and Sh*tsubishi owners would pull up next to him in there two tone horrific paint job blue over gold or even worse teal over gold with there mirror tints.

Scarred me for life as a child to be honest Big Cry
