United Kingdom 2015 Freelander 2 SD4 SE Auto Orkney Grey

Just back from M J Fews having had the diff fixed under warranty - currently all quiet Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Notwithstanding, and as has been previously mentioned by myself, it is disgusting that a 3yo car with less than 30k on the clock should succumb to this problem. Over 50 years driving experience and I have never had a diff go on any of the tens of cars I've owned. No, what is really disgusting is that this problem has been known about for years and years and has affected every year of FL2 since 2006. Why the hell it was not sorted out years ago is beyond belief. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

They are supposed to have beefed up the bearing post 2012/13 but the guy at Fews said that some of the bearings fitted are of inferior quality and that's why they fail. Just hope that my motor isn't' built from the left over parts being one of the last produced. Confused MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

I understand Bell Engineering modify the diff housing and fit a larger uprated bearing as their fix. Maybe JLR need to take some interest...

Had a diff whine on my 59 HSE thought it was a wheel bearing at first but it grew worse.

And thanks to bell Engineering now have new upgraded diff fitted reasonable price fitted including Haldex strip and service with new filters and oil and guess what the new diff even has a drain plug so sensible

Update - Finally got the car looked at today (03/01/1Cool as everywhere was fully booked before Christmas. I took it to a garage in Reading called Rovertune, who only deal with Landrovers
I have been told that the power transfer unit next to the gearbox is making the whining noise and they have quoted me £1016.00 to replace it. It’s not a brand new unit and a guy they use is building it to be fitted tomorrow afternoon or Friday morning.
Has anyone heard of these before or has anyone had one done? Does the price sound ok?
Austen, if your about, have you heard of these making noises and being replaced?

Picked the car up this morning and all is quiet and running well. Time to get rid I think

Bell charge £576 for recon unit so your price sounds a little expensive to me with just a morning or afternoons labour to be added.

The unit itself was just over £500 so sounds the same. The Labour charges and oil/sundries took up the rest

England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Firenze Red

MY13 HSE Lux SD auto has very recently developed a low pitched rumble/whine from the rear. It changes in volume with road speed both in drive and coasting in neutral. I have just refitted my winter tyres (known to be quiet prior to removal last month) to rule out tyres but it made no difference.

Looks like I'll be calling Bell's Engineering for an appointment to supply and fit a new rear diff... hopefully they can get me sorted quickly as I have my next hols in early July - towing my 1600kg caravan but if anyone has any first hand knowledge of rear end drivetrain noises I'd be grateful for any pointers that might save a 200 mile round trip to Bells.

Cheers... Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

If you're certain the noise is from the rear & not tyres, then your only other options are wheel bearings or diff. Wheel bearing noise usually varies in tone as you load & unload the bearings when cornering. Diff more so when on & off the power. I have just replaced my diff with a Bell Engineering one & my rear droning has now gone!

Nick

ps the easiest & most certain way to confirm the noise is by using a set of chassis ears in my opinion.

Cheers Nick.

Definitely not tyres - summer wheels/tyres off, winter wheels/tyres on but no change there. I can detect no play in any of the wheel bearings and again, no change on cornering so it all points to the diff.

I'll give Bell's a call.

Edited to add:
Now booked in for new diff.

Just back from Bell's Engineering - not the diff but a rear wheel bearing, quickly diagnosed by Austen.

Thank's Austen... a really nice, confidence inspiring fellow and easy to see why he is the go to man for FL2 diff /haldex issues. He'll definitely be my first port of call if/when I do have diff/haldex problems. Thumbs Up
