I have an update.
1. I found by chance that all my tyres were massively over inflated. From when the winter tyres were fitted about 5 weeks ago. After deflating to the correct pressure the noise reduced massively, but didn't disappear completely.
2. I contacted Bell engineering who told me that they could recommend Terrain in St. Leonards. I'll be contacting them to arrange a visit.

Harrumph, whine started last week. Thought it was a wheel bearing but independant confirmed today is diff.

79k miles

Now got to get Warranty Direct to cough up.

Well, car been in for fix today and not diff but wheel bearing as I first thought (phew).

Even got Warranty Direct to cough up 60% towards.

Result, for now. Will have ear cocked listening for any other noise.

Well, rear diff has now gone.

Off to see Austen at Bell Engineering for this and Haldex service.

After trip to Austen peace is now restored. Amazing what you will put up with by turning radio up.

Thanks to Bell Engineering. Great job, great service. Andy

6 weeks out of Warranty and I think the rear diff bearing is failing. Local mechanic took it for a test drive and seems to think the noise (a sort of howling noise not unlike the wind blowing) emanates from the diff. Off to Fews at Charfield this am for definitive prognosis and hopefully fixed under warranty. Failing that a trip to Austen Bell. Only done 30k with minimal off road work BOOLLOXS. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

I find it hard to believe such a late car would still have a diff failure.

At 30K are you on new rubber ? If not do not rule out tyres. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Yes, new pirelli tyres all round. Both I and mechanical have done the wheel bearings test both static and moving (swerving left and right) so left with the quandary. The noise only seems to come on after driving a few miles and does vary in intensity and is most pronounced when backing off on the accelerator. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Good luck in finding out the culprit and convincing LR to put it right then as you seem to have ruled out a few gremlins already. Don't forget to update us all. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

How long have the new tyres been on? Having experienced diff and wheel bearing issues they would be present as soon as you pulled away. It's not turbo whine I suppose? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I initially attributed the whine to the tyres as I was down to circa 3mm. New tyres fitted on Tuesday of this week - scorpion zeros on all four wheels with tracking and balancing.

Will report back on what M J Fews have to say - would be well relieved if it's something simple but fearing the worse. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Just back from M J Fews - they took it for a test drive and put it up on their ramps and confirmed a worn bearing in Diff. The good news is they can do the repair under warranty PHEW. Booked in for the 15th December Thumbs Up MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

- 30 000 miles : whining -> rear diff changed
- 40 000 miles : vibrations on rear wheels when turning and accelerating --> Haldex unit changed and problem solved
- 40 200 miles : Vibrations again -> Oh sorry the Haldex unit changed 200 miles ago was brand new and faulty we will change it again --> then changed and problem solved
- 41 000 miles : Vibrations again .... Oh sorry again, the two previous Haldex changed were faulty even if brand new ..it happens you know we have to change it again --> changed and problem solved so Far ...

Now 43 000 miles and the last Haldex fitted seems ok so far ...

Well ... I spoke too soon ... 1500 miles later ... juddering again .... and car out of warranty Thumbs Up
I'm fed up with this situation ... and don't know what to think. What could wreck the haldex after a short mileage ? Banging Head

Follow up .... After few months of deep investigations. We have the answer

As said above car going in for diff repair - question to you knowledgeable guys, does the haldex unit get serviced at the same time viz new oil and filter?

Thanks in advance. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Like YB, I am amazed to hear of such a late car with diff bearing issues. It should have the diff with the larger bearing, so really shouldn't have that problem. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.
