That's what I mean. The diff's outlasted the wheel bearing and it's "phew". £300 a corner x4 wheel bearings is a lot more than the diff will cost. People say "not fit for purpose" and "just too small" about the diff bearing. Well I'd have liked to think wheel bearing technology was nailed down by now!

My son's experience with Warranty Direct on a Porsche 911 wasn't good so I have always gone for the LR full warranty package. Does anyone have a figure for what Warranty Direct charge vs LR extended warranty? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

don't know but I would never in a million years buy an after market warranty from an indy dealer or direct. nothing but bad experience with RAC and Warranty Direct/Wise (whichever Quentin Wilson puts his name to)

the only exception would be if the dealer was throwing it in to the screen price and the car was value for money.

or something like LR Approved warranty which in my experience has been nothing short of excellent.

Harrumph, whine started last week. Thought it was a wheel bearing but independant confirmed today is diff.

79k miles

Now got to get Warranty Direct to cough up.

Well, car been in for fix today and not diff but wheel bearing as I first thought (phew).

Even got Warranty Direct to cough up 60% towards.

Result, for now. Will have ear cocked listening for any other noise.

Well, rear diff has now gone.

Off to see Austen at Bell Engineering for this and Haldex service. Andy

The dreaded whining noise

Morning all. The title says it all. Got the whining noise last week and it has got worse over the week
My car isn't under warranty so I could be looking at getting hit hard in the pocket
My question is, as I can't get it booked in until 12th December, will I cause more damage by carrying on to drive the vehicle?
I have a 2013 facelift model on a 62 plate that has done 45k

12 December ? are you asking a main dealer to do this ? If so the damage will be more wallet than diff.

Take a trip to Bell Engineering, give Austen a call and discuss options/costs. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I'm near Chichester so Bell engineering in Worcestershire is a bit distant.
Does anyone know of any specialists I can trust to check our 2013 freelander 2 closer to portsmouth/Chichester ??

I haven't called the guy heat @ Bell. Will do that in the morning
I'm starting to wonder if it may be a wheel bearing. Does anyone here know what the sound is like from the Diff? What I mean is is there a distinctive sound that is only heard at certain speeds or can you hear it constantly?

Bearing noise is like a deep drone. Diff noise is more likely to be heard when accelerating or on the over run whereas a worn wheel bearing can be heard more when cornering. The noise from either is very similar however. A wheel bearing will sound noisy when turning one way and quiet when turning the other way. If you can find a quite stretch of road and try weaving left and right a bit it might help identify where the noise is coming from. Bearing noises can sometimes be very difficult to pin down as you may notice in other posts where people have had similar issues. You could also try jacking up one wheel at a time and checking for play /roughness in the bearing by holding the wheel at the 6 and 12 o`clock position and rocking it back and forward. (Be safe when doing this and always use axle stands) Some other members have also found that what they thought was a bearing noise turned out to be their tyres that had started to drone when about 3/4`s worn Good luck! Thumbs Up

I wished it were as simple as tyres but I fear the worst
The noise I hear is when the car is travelling straight or cornering
The fact I had the error message gearbox fault, traction reduced message come up about 3 weeks ago makes me think Diff even more
