United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Orkney Grey
Dash Camera

Been looking at the Roadhawk HD and Blackvue 600 and reading comments on here about them which seem favourable , I have just been alerted to the Nextbase 402 Dashcam at £140 which appears to have good reviews , anyone have any knowledge or feedback of this model ?

I considered the nexbase - but thought it was FUGLY, and the mount looked awful.
Good picture quality and reviews though

Love my two Blackvue's ( though my dr600 GPS just stopped working, so will need to get it exchanged)

England 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Santorini Black

Think it or one of its brothers have been reviewed on the D3/4 forum.
When I get around to one will look at the Mi witness. FL2 SD4 Metropolis Auto Santorini Black / ivory completely stock.

One thought.... these nice and expensive in car cameras may be the next target of theft....

I'm in the process of looking for a small and cheap one so it can be left in ...

Most people don't even realise there is a camera there, the Blackvue fits up behind the interior mirror, the recording LED is turned off, no one has ever commented it's there. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Scotland 2009 Freelander 2 TD4_e HSE Manual Lago Grey

I was reading posts on another forum that a lot of people were concerned that when you put your vehicle in for a service and or MOT, the mechanic ( in loose terms of course ) takes it out and gives it a good thrashing.

there are numerous instances when this has been picked up on the dash cam.

this type of thing

great choice
remember to upgrade the firmware to latest and greatest, and if possible do not use Sandisk cards
especially the larger sizes - they have a unusual memory controller chip that Blackvue devices dont
get along with. I tried this and had issues with the 64gb cards.
Now I use the more expensive, but approved, Delkin 64GB MICROSDHC 375X UHS-I
Always format using the sdformatter tool in FAT32

It must just be the 64gb sandisk cards that have the problem as I use 32gb sandisk in my blackvue and its fine.

Upgrading to the latest firmware isn't always best especially as the blackvues don't let you roll back to a previous version. My DR3500-FHD came with firmware 1.4, I updated it to 1.5 which added some feature I wasn't interested in, only to find the recording bitrate halved. It was only going back to the supplier who knew his stuff and we were able to trick the device into using the old firmware. It was a few months before Blackvue released 1.6 to fix the bit rate problem, but that did also include a fix to get rid of some jittery playback.

cable run took me 5-10 minutes

I started with the A pillar

I loosened the trim cover, and fed the cable behind the air bag near the topmost edge of the windscreen
using a piece of plastic.
ensure there is sufficient cable to run along the windscreen towhere the camera is to be located
(leave a couple of inches spare to allow for ease of plugging in etc)
This cable will push up under the edge of the roof liner and run around the sensor / mirror mount
It will be all but invisible.
The other end of the cable will run under the trim on the a pillar ( remove the rubber door trim for easy access )
run this all the way down to where the seat is - there is a join in the carpet here.
Lift up the carpet joint and run cable through here, under the seat and up to the center console
Easy, only the very last part is visible where it goes into the center console and the power socket.
This is not noticed in daily driving.

I may lift the center console at a later date and feed the cable underneath it and up in to the cubby hole
Just cannot be bothered at moment

If you are not interested in using the parking mode feature plugging into the front socket will be fine as it will stop recording when the vehicle goes to sleep, otherwise you should consider a Power Magic \ Power Magic pro and just plug it into the passenger fuse panel via a piggy back fuse, that will save your car battery from being killed.

I'd recommend removing the A pillar, otherwise you risk fouling the air bag, its one torx screw behind the plastic tab and the A pillar then just pulls off, you can then cable tie to the existing wiring and go down behind the glove box (easily removable once you learn the technique).

What's this power magic pro ? I really don't like the idea of it powering from the socket this way sounds much tidier.

Power Magic Pro connects to a permanent live 12v feed, and will power the camera until the battery voltage hits a pre set (low) voltage. It will then power off the camera to prevent your battery going flat.

It has benefits, but for me I don't want/need 24x7 recording
