More luggage space needed!

Hi, im planning on taking my FL2 on a few camping trips this year. But I need more luggage space (Big tent, dog, 3 kids, the wife and luggage). I cant decide between getting a tow hitch fitted and buying a trailer or getting some roof bars fitted and buying a big roof box. What are your opinions? I have the panoramic roof, so not all roof bars fit mine. Really sort of stumped on all the options out there. Any help here would be great thanks.

I plumped for a roof box and Thule bars, quick and simple, going to have it wrapped, toying with gloss black or carbon fibre look.

A roof rack will limit what/how much you can carry and I would also be concerned about the proximity of the panoramic roof.

A tow hitch and a smallish trailer will also not restrict you on weight, even a Defender should only carry up to 75kg on a roof rack.

If going the roof box route, we always used to hire the bars and box for a week, worked out at about £30 for a week. Since we only went away once a year, it was a lot more cost-effective that way, and it also encouraged us to pack light.

You could get a tow ball mounted basket.

Should be able to take quite a weight on the towball with a fl2.

I'm kinda in the same boat, my brother, my nephew and my brothers new partner (burd, girlfriend, bint) are coming over from Canada for 2 weeks in September . If they all bring a decent sized case with hand luggage I'm screwed. So I dug out my roof box which I bought for my mk1 freelander in 1998 ( don't say us scots are tight) . Gave it a wash and hey presto .. Loads of room . The box doesn't look that big but you can fit 2 full sets of golf clubs length was with room loads of other smaller stuff.
The only slight problem is , with the roof box on I can't fit under the main car park barrier at Glasgow airport .
Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

I would love a wee trailer (I could put the bint in it 👍🏻) but I don't have any where to store it . It's a narrow gap (gate) to get to my back garden. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

Great help thanks everyone for replying. I've looked at the options and I reckon im going to go with some roof bars, (I don't have roof rails, so they will be the ones that clamp to the tops of the doors Thule ones.) and a basket/tray on top. That way I can get my massive tent up on top the roof with one of those really big holdall bags. Tent weighs about 30kg, full bag of clothes, sleeping bags etc. should weigh about 25kg so that should be fine. I think the basket gives me more flexibility with stuff I can carry on the roof.
I don't have a tow hitch on mine and don't really want to fork out to have one fitted then buy a trailer just for a couple of camping trips a year.
