I have this engine listed as an "interference engine" which means yes the valves and other components are at risk if the belt snaps.
Dont forget its not just the belt you need to check, you need to ensure tensioner, pulleys and water pump are all in good condition, failure of any of these can throw or strip the belt with the same result as it snapping

From what I have heard from guys in the trade, cambelts rarely fail unless contaminated with oil or something, its usually the waterpump or occasionally the tensioners. We once had a Clio with a new cambelt fitted at time of purchase but 12k miles on the waterpump threw a wobbly and threw the belt. Now I always insist on a waterpump with a belt change. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Make sure you always replace the belt guards too, they arent there just to stop you getting tangled up in it but to protect the belt as well as any nicks in the edge could seriously reduce its life too.
Many guards are a right fiddle to refit so folk leave them off, not a good idea.
