I suppose it's possible that the blocked filter in the reservoir caused damage to the pump. Is the pump still whining? If so it might mean that the reservoir filter is blocked again and that you didn't get all of the crud out. If not whining then no back pressure so would suspect the pump. Just my thoughts. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Its a weird one because from start up its fine no noise at all. Its as though once the fluid warms up after 30 mins of driving it starts whining. I will try and see if filter is clogged again. Im tempted to try a pump but just find itweird thats its spot on when cold. Ta

Fairly common problem with early Freelander 2 models. Caused be poor welding on the steering column which breaks up and leads to a blocking of the power steering unit filter. Initial solution is to remove and clean or replace filter and then refill with new power steering fluid. If that doesn't work then it's usually a new steering column and new power steering unit and filters. Had mine done under warranty so no idea of costs and actual work involved.

For what it's worth I had to do mine twice within a few days to get a result.
The problem was caused by deterioration of the flexible hoses. Black stuff from these hoses had blocked the filter. Once I'd given it a good second flushing it was fine and I didn't change the hoses either.
I would think it's unlikely to be weld splatter as this would have raised it's head long ago on a 07 vehicle. Unless a job in the past was botched.
Dunno why a poster said the steering column may need replacing; it's nowt to do with the hydraulic part of power steering. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

If the flush doesn't cure it, and it didn't on my wife's 09 with 36k miles last year. You are looking at a new pump/rack/ reservoir. Although our car was second hand, out of warranty, we got a LR contribution towards the repair. The Main Dealer said he had never heard of the problem, the nice person at LR customer service would not agree with me that the forums were awash with this problem. Anyway we had a full service record for the car, and have been LandRover loyal for 20 + years, ( don't know if that mattered, but we told them and they knew) . We got a 50% contribution to the repair so approx £450 if I remember rightly, would put the job at around £900. ? 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
