I'd assume it's so that you're easier to spot in the desert, but if you can enlighten on the detail.

It's a requirement for driving across the Simpson desert, probably due to shifting sands that could bury the vehicle. Have a read at Vesko's other posts, they are superb

The Simpson Desert consists of around 1000 sand dunes running parallel to each other. Each must be crossed to complete the desert crossing.
There is also only one real track (road!!), with cars traveling both Easterly and Westerly on the same track.
As the dunes are quite steep and most have a sharpish drop-off to the other side with very little flat space at the crest, the flag is to alert one car trying to crest from one direction that there is another trying to crest from the other.
Radio is also used, but the valley/hill terrain makes its use problematic.
(Most, if not all, vehicles making the crossing are equipped with 2 way radio)

It is on most serious (and not so serious) 4WD people's bucket list to cross the Simpson.
It is in the middle of the Australian continent, is at least 3-4 days travel through rough-ish terrain just to get there, then 2-3 days with no fuel, wateror other supplies available on the track. Also no , spares or mechanical support. You have to carry ALL you need with you from the edge of the desert.
Hence, a challenge, for all 4WDers and why is is on the bucket lists

As a newbie to FL2, I'm intrigued by the roof rack you are using which doesn't seem to have need of the usual roof rails. Can you say where this comes from ?

It's a Thule roof rack with pedestal legs that sit directly on the roof with rubber cushions and clip under the top of the doors.
