Changing Rear Brake Pads with electronic park brake

Been a while since I posted on here, been playing with a TD5 Disco, so been lurking on Disco sites!! Freely has just had to lump the lack of attention.

At 38K rear pads are worn out. Interestingly have got 42 - 45K out of previous ones.

Is it possible to DIY change pads with electronic park brake? I have done a number with the mechanical handbrake. Is there anything else involved? Not keen on being ripped off by main dealer for a job I can do myself. 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

Not 100% sure on the electronic handbrake versions but in the mechanical ones, the handbrake shoes and foot brake pads are seperate. In other words, the handbrake being on does not affect what you do with disc pads. On other cars with electric handbrake that automatically comes on when you switch off the engine (Renault Meganne etc) that operated the pads instead of seperate shoes like on my FL, I have done them with the engine running!

Looking on Evoque sites, which correct me if I am wrong has the same set up as 13MY.

It looks as if there is a procedure for putting park brake into service mode but wind back of the piston requires computer hook-up. Can anyone confirm this.
The second option would be to find a local Indy with the correct diagnostics, at least their rates, workmanship should be better than Stealer. Interestingly there was no advisory on brake pad ware at the last service 36K?? Wonder if they took rear wheels off - or am I being way too cynical!! 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

[/bRear brakes sorted. I signed up to Topix and printed off pad change instructions. Basically its the same as previous models except you have to set the park brake into service mode and then unset it again once job is finished.

Procedure is:

Ensure its in park or neutral and the park brake deactivated and ignition turned on.

1. Press and hold the parking brake switch in the release position.

2. Wait 2 seconds

3. Press and hold the accelerator pedal in the wide open throttle position.

4. Wait 2 seconds

5. Turn ignition off and on immediately whilst still finger on park button and foot on throttle.

6. An audible noise will confirm service mode, it will also be displayed on dash.

You will hear the brake motors activate for a while.

Deactivation

with ignition on.

1. Press and hold the parking brake switch in the apply position.

2. Wait 2 seconds

3. Press and hold the accelerator pedal in the wide open throttle position.

4. Wait 2 seconds

5. Turn ignition off and on again. keeping finger on park button and foot on throttle.


I used genuine pads for £50. They come with new pad retaining clips which must be fitted the correct way round.

Silver clip on top and gold clip on bottom. Piston can be retracted back into caliper with G cramp or wind back tool.

Hope this helps someone save £200. Ignore the garage saying it needs to be connected to their computer to change the pads.

The pads were down to the metal on one pad. The car had a 36K service 2K miles ago and there was no mention from the stealer about brake pad ware. I think I am going to have an interesting conversation with the service manager next week! 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

I had 83000 on my last car, granted a lot of motorway but the pads all round were never changed and still plenty on them, I would look into whether you have an issue somewhere.

Are they the same pads (same Part Number) for pre and post MY13 (EPB)?

I changed the rear pads on my last 2007 FL2 at about 45,000 miles only because I had to change the disks due to corrosion at the time (common fault on early models apparently). Quite a bit of life left in them if I remember. Gone:

I think they are a different part number pre and post MY13.

EPB versions appear to be a bit heavier on rear pad ware. There are a number of threads on Evoque forums about this. My previous 2 needed rear pads circa 45K but that's mostly A,B roads / off road / towing so ware will be higher than someone doing motorway miles. 1998 Feelander XDI Hardback - Gone

England 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Orkney Grey

Just wondering if anyone could offer some help. I have a Freelander 2 TD4 2013 which I intend to replace the rear pads. I've watched a few videos which show different ways and I'm a little confused. Various videos put the vehicle in to service mode to disengage the electric park brake to fit the pads but I've also seen ones where you need to remove the electric park brake from the caliper with a t30. Do I need to do both or is is just either way? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. So when I rewind the piston it should hopefully move back because I've put it in to service mode and released the EPB? No need to physically remove the EPB from the caliper then before you move the sliders from the caliper? I've seen a video which shows the removal before the piston can be pushed back however it didn't state if the vehicle was put in to service mode.

When put in service mode, only the handbrake mechanism inside the piston retracts. You still have to push the piston back as per normal procedure. You remove the calliper and epb unit as one.

If you are not using the service mode, then you have to remove the epb motor to manually wind the handbrake mechanism back before you can push the piston back. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
