2011 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Santorini Black

Best looking fl2 So far.

The tyres fit the arches with perfection.

If you say it is all ok to drive, this is just Perfect.

It does look mean, I give you that. But the drivetrain will be under a lot of stress as you have significantly down geared the car.

Drivability will suffer, but I take on board what you say about off road use. But I would also agree that the Haldex unit will give up the ghost sooner than you think. Clutch will also suffer it is a manual.

Personally, I think your asking for trouble,, no offence meant. Thumbs Up Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Thanks Mav Thumbs Up

Personally I don't reckon the difference is that big to warrant me concern.
I always drive my vehicles sympathetically and I would reckon that an FL2 that's floored, revved, thrown into corners and generally not well looked after, is more prone to suffer the problems you're predicting.

I'd previously heard all these scare stories before when I fitted oversize tyres on my D3, then D4.
Had absolutely no issues whatsoever on both vehicles (with the D3 covering 130k on its oversize tyres).

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but each to their own.

I checked an online tyre size calculator and it showed those tyres only have a 7.5% bigger circumference than the 'standard' 235/65/17. Surely that won't increase the loads on the drivetrain by much and I can't imagine the difference to gearing would be noticeable when driving either.

Looks fab ronp, I wouldn't be worried about it Thumbs Up

Thanks MartinP, and no I'm not worried about it.
And your right, I don't notice a thing whilst driving (apart from the speedo v gps reading - which I expected).....
..... Oh, and the nice soft cushioning ride. Thumbs Up

Now if we were talking 'extreme' well yes I would agree with the naysayers that it could be heading for problems.
I also reckon that of the two, oversizing ie lower gearing, will have a less detrimental effect than under sizing (higher gearing). FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Ron, are you sure? I would expect the reverse is true: Oversizing (ie bigger rolling radius) results in higher gearing, undersizing results in lower gearing. Confused

Well Bob I'm certainly no professor of engineering.
Now when I say 'low gear' I mean low speed and easier to move off from a standing start than a 'high gear' (high speed).
For example, on my bike when I select the biggest sprocket on the rear wheel ie 1st gear (the largest rolling radius) I can move off very easily.
By contrast, if I select the smallest sprocket on the rear wheel ie 9th gear (the smallest rolling radius) then it's very difficult to move off and takes a lot of strain to do so.

Anyway, that's my take on it and I may have it all 'bum to elbow' but as I said before I reckon it's all negligible for the slight difference in additional rolling radius and my actual past experiences with this increase ..... mountains out of molehills! FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Hi Ron. I see where you are coming from with your bike gears example. However, the gears you talk about are effectively your gearbox what has not changed. By upping the rolling radius of the tyres you have changed the final drive ratio. To use your bike example, changed the bike rear wheel from (say) 26" to 28". You will then find it harder to pedal in all gears.

In your case, I agree the change may be negligible but a change it is. You are in the process of making a bigger mountain, not a smaller molehill. Wink

for the negligible increase I reckon RonP is right not to give a monkeys.

If this 7% increase breaks his car then I'd be selling mine fast - It can't be any worse than starting regular 17"'s from a hill start...
No problem whatsoever. Anyway, DOOM merchants aside - it looks BRILLIANT!

A very nice looking motor there, the rubber certainly fits in very well with the look!

I'm liking the rear tints, what are they they seem quite dark?

Too right Graham, personally I don't give a stuff as to what the Doomsayers predict...... never have. Laughing

You either go by speculation or experience ......... for me, I'll stick with experience any day thank you. Wink

But as I've said before, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, so thanks all for taking the time to comment ..... good or bad. Thumbs Up
