Tyre Dilema

Right. Car currently has 4 nice new (fitted in October 15) Wintrac Extreme 6 winters on. Noticed one was going soft slowly so took it in to get checked. Puncture in the sidewall. Can't be repaired (have read a few arguments on here but as far as I'm concerned, it's a goner).

So as I was going to be swapping them over for my summers (which I bought second hand) at the end of the month so thought I'd just swap them over now rather than replace one winter tyre only for it to sit in the garage for a other 6 months.

Was about to put them on today and noticed that the DOT stamp is 0110 so the tyres are all 6 years old Sad didn't know about DOT stamps when I bought them.

So, I know it isn't really the best idea to drive on old tyres, so do I buy one new winter and just drive on those all year, or buy 4 new summers and still have to fork out for another winter come October time?

Any thoughts appreciated. Learned to drive in 2011.

0110 is not good. I even change my caravan tyres at 5 years. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Thanks for that. I think the only sensible, if expensive option, is to get a new set. Learned to drive in 2011.

Tyre life can vary greatly according to make, type, usage, storage when off the car, etc. So long as the tyres show no obvious signs of deterioration (e.g. severe cracking in the sidewall) then I personally wouldn't be worried by 6 year old tyres. In fact my winter set are now 5 years old and as there's still plenty of tread left on them and no sign of deterioration I anticipate using them for another couple of winters at least.

N.B. Trailer and caravan tyres tend not to last as long as premium car tyres, so changing caravan tyres more regularly may make sense.

I took a close look at them today and there are clear splits where the tread meets the main tyre body. They aren't big splits but splits none the less. Considering the weight of the car I don't think that's a good idea.

Tyres are Wrangler AT/SA. Learned to drive in 2011.

If you're happy with the winter wheels and you don't do a great mileage I'd buy one new Vredestein and run the winters. I've often run Vredestein all year round. driving on the right side

each to their own, I prefer 2 sets of tyres, there are benefits to this approach.
you have the best grip in all seasons, and the winter tyres will last longer as they wear much quicker when warm

Thanks all. I was considering the using winters all year but I bought those with the aim tthatd I have the .most tread when I needed it. Running them full time would soon mean they aren't at peak winter ability.

So I've bit the bullet and ordered a new set of tyres for use during the non-winter. Ouch, but safety first. Learned to drive in 2011.

A friend bought 4 tyres for his vehicle at £740 each only to realise a few weeks later they were already over 10 years old.
He queried it with Michelin and together with them and the folk who fitted them got a full refund and another new set free of charge, its worth checking.

It's always a bit dodgy to buy second-hand tyres - you don't know their history. I have done so in the past, but only from forum members (was I wrong to trust you? - you know who you are!) and one was brand new, so no problem. I think it's OK to have a second-hand/old tyre as a spare, since it will get little use, if ever. Of course if you buy a second-hand car you get second-hand tyres. Do the dealers whip them all off the rims and check them over? I doubt it.
My wife's Astra which we traded in recently had three of the original 10 year old tyres on it and I would have considered changing them if she had kept it, but there were no signs of cracking and two still had 5mm of tread - it's probably been resold with them still on.
Apparently it's illegal to fit tyres more than 3 months old to a new car, hence the brand new sets of wheels and tyres that appear sometimes on e-bay. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
