2014 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Loire Blue

My experience of both is.

My11 Manual:
-Mine was 8 mpg better than my current 14 reg auto.
-The manual was better for the road craft system of driving.
-It did need a new clutch at 13000 miles - pedal became hard to press after constant long journeys.
-Reverse gear is far to fast. Not so good for moving caravan.
-when really cold, hard frosts, difficult to change gear for first half mile.
-I liked the stop/start, worked very well.

My14 auto:
-standard auto mode is ok, not particularly smooth but good enough.
-command shift is good, makes towing less dramatic and far more economical than normal auto mode.
-Sport mode, I find no use for this as command shift works better, (in my opinion).
-very poor on fuel, but when you add up the difference of 8 mpg less than the manual, it does not equate to that much so not much point worrying about it.
-better for towing caravan when in command shift but not so good in normal auto mode.
-I tow pig sheds on skids around a muddy field Now and again, the auto is far better at this.
-auto is easier to operate off road. (In my opinion).

Conclusion:
I have always preferred manuals, I disliked the my14 auto to begin with but now I prefer it to the my11 manual.
The mpg loss is worth it. Bear in mind if your looking at an 09 manual then it is less efficient than the more recent stop start ones so the mpg difference between the two will be less.

Thanks for the comparison wurzel153(thought you would be from sumerset with a name like hat) I wont be towing a caravan or anything but the stop/start does appeal there is a 59 plate not far from me with stop/start (TD4e) so may look at that soon

As for winter tyres I have never bothered it's just about thinking ahead and driving sencibly that topped with a 4x4 and shouldn't have to many problems, it's not like we live it Alaska but cheers for all the comments keep them coming
