Stop/start

Don't know if this is a problem or not but we where out in the Freelander this weekend came to a stop and the stop/start operated and stoped the engine then 5 seconds later the engine started again, I hadn't pressed the cluth pedal in I hadn't touched anything at all. We have been thinking the battery was getting a bit sluggish and maybe due to be changed, so wondered if the stop/start was detecting poor battery voltage so starting the engine though maybe it shouldn't of stopped the engine in the first place ?? 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8

While the engine is running and the alternator voltage applied, it wouldn't know if the battery was on the way out so only when it stops will it know somethings amiss with the battery.

It could just be some system on the car demanding power while the engine is stopped and the car will restart itself to cope, - classic culprit is the air-conditioning. It makes me jump when it restarts on its own but can happen even when the battery is fine, its just the way stop/start copes with electrical demand if it thinks the draw on the battery is too great while the engine is stopped.

What he said !! Mine also makes me jump sometimes when it starts itself. At other times I get a message ' Restart required - Press clutch' It just seems random whether it restarts itself or tells you to press the clutch

My 2011 stopped stopping so when under warranty in June it was looked at. After some persuasion that there was a problem (obviously didn't take the word of a woman !! Wife was cross) the updated the software in the BCM.
This improved it for a while but soon relapsed.
When in for free winter check they then reconditioned the battery. Ie overnight discharge and recharge I assume.
Was a bit better until flat battery after 2 weeks sat on drive. 😬 Big Cry
I reckon the battery should have been replaced FL2 11 S Black 😂

If you are doing a lot of stop starting that is a fair bit of stress on the battery over the long term. With your cold weather added to the equation even more so. Car batteries really should be changed every 4 years if you don't want to be left in the lurch.

The number of people around my area with tired old batteries is staggering. Quite often I'm jump starting them with my 200 amp (continuous) welding cable with solid copper (not plated) clamps. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

If I could permanently disable it I would but I just switch it off with the dash button everytime I get in. It makes minimal difference to mpg and puts too much wear on the battery. An utter pile of sh*te feature Censored * GONE. GS TD4 Manual MY2013. Orkney Grey with privacy, cold and clearview packs, armrests (a must!) and a spoiler.

Stop start, wear on the battery, there is a thread I've seen elsewhere, that says that it is putting a lot of strain on the Cam Belt with continual Stop and Start, battery would be the least of my worries if that is the case.

Stop-start will work less in cold conditions, hence not so much now. The algorithm that decides when to stop and when to restart must be complex. I've not been asked to press the clutch myself, it just starts if it needs to. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

Mine seems to do it when the engine is warm but not up to full working temperature.
On my drive to work it stops then starts itself at the same set of lights every morning, by the next set I start it using the clutch as normal.
