Bizarrely, it seems (in my completely subjective experience) to vary from engine to engine. In my D2, BP Ultimate made an obvious difference to performance and MPG, 50% bio even more so. And, strangely, French BP (which must be different as it smells vaguely of perfume and costs slightly more than French BP truck diesel) also made a slight difference. For the FR2, I seem to find the greatest improvement using the expensive Shell fuel, which had no obvious effect on the D2! Unfortunately, recycled bio-diesel is apparently not suitable for the FR2 engine. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Update: it seems Tesco are taking the problem seriously, even if I wasn't, and they are digging up the tanks where the problem occurred:

TBH I've seen enough incidents reported where supermarket fuel has been sub-standard, and I've had enough positive results from using premium BP to avoid supermarket fuel ad finitum. A couple of quid a tank is a small price to pay for the benefits in smoother running, more reliable fuel, quieter engine etc. ...

For anyone interested, the mystery of the contaminated diesel at my local Tesco's has been solved, at least partially. A man has been charged with stealing diesel from the tanker and replacing it with something else:

I will never touch supermarket diesel in my cars. I have said it many times before, its a complete false economy. The local Shell and BP are within 1/2p of the supermarkets, and are closer.

I have never had one EGR or fuel system issue in 9 diesel cars covering in total over 350,000 miles.

But company policy instructs us where possible to use super market fuel in the company car, and in 63000 miles in my Audi, I am on my 2 EGR valve and the removed fuel filters are in a poor state compared to my own cars.

I've found for a number of years now that every vehicle I've owned has performed better usin premium fuels. Most often BP Ultimate for the Nectar points.... The engines are more responsive, mpg is improved by 5-10% compared with proprietary fuel, and the F2 sits in 6th In 50 mph speed limit zones much more readily. Paying about 7% more for the fuel seems reasonable to me, even purely based on mpg.

Compared with supermarket fuel, where our vehicles return about 10% lower mpg than proprietary standard fuel, and run as lumpy as school custard...!

Buy a petrol - you know it makes sense

There's a BP fuel depot by my office where tankers with all different livery come and go all day every day, and guess what - they all fill up at the same spot! This supermarket fuel is dodgy talk is another urban myth methinks! Fair enough if you're buying premium grades, I know I won't put anything but BP Ultimate in my M3, but bog standard fuel is exactly that whether you buy it inTesco or BP (other fuel suppliers are available ) 2014 SE Loire Blue SD4 Auto (MY15)

It's true, most have the same base fuel, but it's all in the additive pack, mixed in on the loading rack as the road tanker is loaded, which makes the difference (or not!)... Depends upon who the pot is for. I've spent a lot of time working in these sorts of places... 2000 Xei 1.8 gone

Its true, all the supermarkets and main fuel companies delivery trucks fill up from the same bulk storage tanks, its what goes in on the ramps individually to each tanker that makes the difference with regards additives. So you get supermarket trucks pulling off with "naked" fuel and BP and the likes with "pimped up" fuel.

There is just not the footprint or practicality to have each individual fuel company having its own bulk storage tanks, one for this grade, one for that grade etc so its all stored as one job lot, petrol and diesel obviously being separated. MY2010 TD4 HSE Santorini Black, 19" Alloys, Almond Leather, Lux Pack, Rear Spoiler, Adaptive Xenons
