Off road

I went off rod with my car yesterday, it did very well considering the ground clearance.
Has anyone fitted a lift kit

Think you will find that is for the Series One Freelander, it's a 2" Lift Kit.
You will struggle to find a lift kit in the UK for the Freelander 2, you can try a search in here and see what the members down under have found.

Your easiest, quickest lift kit is a set of 245/70/17 tyres. Other than that, a few have made custom spacer lifts that give around 25 mm.

Thanks ,I have seen the spacers on this forum
Bigger tires is a upgrade I will be doing much later as I fitted general grabbers on last year still lots of tread on them
235/65/17
Very little out there for fl2 off road mods still

245/70/17 will give you nearly 20mm lift, give you a significantly bigger footprint for more traction and also smooth out the effect of dips and gouges across tracks. I question whether the spacers are a good idea because of the geometry of the suspension, short front axles and cv joint angles. A lot of hassle for another 20mm.

Yes lots of hassle but 20mm from the tires+20mm from spacers 40mm will make I difference
If I could find rock sliders I could live with cars ground clearance
My sills are well dented

Any underbody protection just reduces your clearance. Rock sliders will knock you down around 50 mm so you will be hitting a lot more rocks. I can't say my sills have been a problem although I have lost the plastic trim along the bottom of the car a few times. I've also had to replace parts of the exhaust pipe that were bashed flat. I don't take it off road much anymore, I feel sorry for it... Smile

Beware that lifting the car creates stress on the CV joints because the front shafts are too short. It seems that 20mm is all that is safe or you risk chewing the cv joints out. A German mob used to offer a lift but they insisted on doing the work due to the possible problems.

There is another German tuner called Matzker who offers a so called 'competition kit' for the RR Evoque.
It can be lifted up to 30 mm.
As we know Evoque and Freelander 2 share the same base.

Scotland 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Bali Blue

I did some similar research when I started doing some Green Road runs in my Freelander 2 in Scotland and ended up grounding the tank support on one event.

I then bought a pair of Mantec sump and fuel tank guards and a set of General Grabber AT's in 245/70 X 17 to give me a bit more clearance and protection off road and this has worked pretty well in the green road runs I have done this year.

I hate missing out on any of the off road sections so I currently have my FL2 off the road and am fitting 20mm spacers to the front suspension as this seems pretty well tried and tested to avoid any drivetrain issues and 25mm spacers to the rear to try and keep the car pretty level but get the fuel tank as high as possible.

Without doing significant changes to the drivetrain and suspension I suspect this is about as much as you can do to increase ground clearance on the FL2.

I am looking forward to seeing how mine performs off road with the 245/70 X 17 tyres and lift spacers fitted now though......

and managed to get stuck on my sills at the top of a hill

The best research / posting that I managed to find on potential lift spacers to fit the Freelander 2 was this one ;

I then e-mailed both Martas and Mihai B to try and get drawings of the lift spacers they got made and fortunately Mihai B still had a copy of Martas's originals which he based his spacers on and kindly sent me. The drawings give the internal & external dimensions of the front and rear spacers but not the holes for the studs so I am in the process of removing the front & rear struts and I will mark up the hole positions compared to the body & struts before I drill the required holes. The front & rear strut mounting bolts will obviously need changed too in order to accomodate the spacers.

I called in a large 'favour' from a good friend who worked in a precision workshop at the time to make the spacers for me - Glad I did as he has since moved to a new job out on the oil rigs!

A good precision engineering workshop should be able to make these up ok though I should think.

It is quite a bit of hassle to get the spacers manufactured and fitted but I like the challenge and between the larger tyres and spacers I should get 45mm extra clearance which hopefully takes my FL2 that bit closer to the Disco's and Defender's off road capabilities on the Green road runs in Scotland.

Well that's the plan!
