Rev it up!

My dear old dad who was a mechanic many years ago always said that you should occasionally rev your engine out to the redline to "clear out the cobwebs". I have usually followed this advice without any problems but only after the engine and gearbox are fully warmed up. I have heard many problems of sludge and carbon build up in moderm engines - is this partly due to the engine never getting a good workout or just poor maintenance. Is there any benefit in reving out modern diesel engines ocasionally?

With the brittle plastic throttle flaps our FL's have, I think revving it past the redline (if you were able to) would possibly do more harm than good! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

I read somewhere max 5000rpm on this engine, but it max out at 4850rpm in the ECU. I agree with Steve D - don't do it!

think its a good idea to giveem a good run once a month or so to clear out the damp caused by short runs so getting a good run at speed but holding it in the higher revs for a short period NOT REDLINING IT gets a good pump of oil to the bits that need it and at temperature to ensure a good oil and clean at same time
