Hi all,

As the header suggests I am looking to change cars and I am considering a used Freelander 2 (I would rather a Disco 3, but her indoors doesn't like them, so freelander 2 is the next best thing).

Anyway just looking out for things to look for when viewing.

My biggest concern relates to rear diffs and premature failure. I know 3x people that have owned FL2 and 2/3 of them had rear diffs fail about 60k miles. The 3rd person was my Step Father, who had no issues. Can anyone tell me if this is a common issue? I have read that the FL2 is one of LR's most reliable models.

FL2 are indeed known as LR's most reliable motor although they do have their common issues, haldex and rear diff being probably the most common.

the haldex threat can be lessened by changing fluid and filters on a more regular basis than recommended by LR but the rear diff really is just pot luck IMO.

newer models 2013> are reputed to have different components in the rear diff which pretty much remove the chance of failure.

but just think how many FL2 have been sold, and then look at the % of those that have had rear diff failures and the numbers will be fractional so don't let it put you off.

hi, thanks for the info. found what looks like a really nice HST for 2007 with only 53.5k on it. can someone tell me the difference between the hse and hst, is it just a body kit?

I used to date a woman on HRT and that was some body kit.

turns out what i was looking at was just an HSE with the HST body kit on. hse on the tailgate and what look like evoke style wheels should have given it away.

still basically the same thing really, The HST was just a bodykit (front grill, front/rear bumper extensions, different lower door panels, rear roof spoiler and exhaust trim)

Hi Just saying hello to all the LR owners out there.
I thought I'd joined this Forum back in 2012 when I bought my Freelander 2 - It doesn't look like I did (I'm a member in too many groups to keep track of them all) I really need to trim some of them back.

Any-hoo, just saying hello and a big thank you to Toris (I hope that's your correct User Name) for the wheels - I've had my originals refurbished now and they look much better in Gun Metal with the Black'n Chrome centres.

following the demise of my D3 I picked up a tidy 2008 2.2 Auto HST

so, starting the endless reading required to continue Land Rover ownership

Picked up our Freelander 2 2 weeks ago. Had to have the bonnet resprayed after the valeters removed some of the paint! Of course at dealers expense, waiting for the new letters to be reapplied.

Thanks for letting me on board. I am on my third FL2 and absolutely love them. I also thought that I owned a Disco Landmark but apparently I don't. My better half tells me that it his hers!
