Australia 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Whistler White
drive loss

Hello to all.
we have had a loss of drive several times recently. we were changing gear when we lost all drive. We came to a halt at the side of the road switched off the engine then restarted it all was OK. tried to look at the transmission with my Hawkeye, it caused all sorts of problems. had to dissconnect the battery to shut everthing down. the last time this happend was on the motorway, however it was quite thankfully.

any ideas
thanks to all

john

was not able to retrieve any codes, when I tried to get the codes from the transmission all sort of issues occurred. could not get the transmission to connect to the hawkeye at al,l as said I had to disconnect the battery. it seems like some sort of canbus problem. did not see the transmission on the hawkeye. I will get around to connecting the reader and make a more detailed description of the issues. but at the moment all is ok.

thanks to all

john

Hello All
same problem again today, cant select a gear!. after changing up from 5 to 6 the gear change gets stuck in neutral. stop the car then turn off the engine then back on again and all is fine. it has been ok for a while but did this twice today. we have been lucky we were able to turn off the road. Cant get the Hawkeye to read the codes when connected it causes havoc when selected to the transmission, need to disconnect the battery to recover control. is there any known issues with the clutch hydraulics that might cause this problem. with no codes it may prove to be back to good old engineering!!!.

thanks to all

I'm afraid I'm still not entirely clear what's happening here.

When you say the gearchange gets stuck in neutral do you mean that the gear lever won't physically move out of the neutral position? The gear change is purely mechanical (cables between gear lever and box), so that would suggest something is jamming the mechanism. (The solenoid which locks out reverse on the move has been known to come adrift and jam the gearchange, but it usually only affects the higher gears.)

Or is it that the lever will select a gear, but that the clutch won't then engage? Or even that the clutch engages but the engine won't then respond to the accelerator and deliver power?

On a manual I'm not sure you'll get much in the way of helpful error codes from the transmission, as there's not much in the way of electronics involved, but there may be something else listed which might contribute to the issue.

In the end, which type of transmission do you have?
From your profile it says Manual, but from your words seems to be automatic...

hello all
the gearbox is manual. the symptoms are as follows. driving along normaly. no different noises from gearbox etc. go to change gear. in to neutral befroe you engage the next gear then it gets stuck. clutch in no crunching sound normally assoicated with the clutch not bening fully released. release the clutch then reapply still no gear selection. pulled the car over. stop the engine. restart the select first gear then drive away normally throught the gears. work for weeks then the fault occurs again. and as said happened twice the other day!!!!!.

regards

JEF

Then, if manual, how on earth to connect it to Hawkeye ?... Confused Shocked
It's a pure mechanical box, without any electronic "brain" at all...

There were some problems with some manual boxes that were unable to select gears.
All was related with the cable linkages that could get loose or not enough grease on them...

Take a look here: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic7445.html

Hello again

On the hawkeye unit there is a transmission selection!! not really sure what you might see as i cant access it anyway. i will have a look at the linkages over the week end and report my findings. will check the clutch as well for leaks etc.

Yes, the transmission option is there alright on Hawkeye, but is working only on the automatic ones.

hello again

some more symptoms. the gear lever goes through the stop when your are trying to select 5/6th gear then it jams. it will only release when the car comes to a stop. so with that in mind I am thinking that the reverse lockout might be playing up.
I found a post here on the same problem so will check it out.

will let you know what I find. PS its intermittent.

regards

jef
