United Kingdom 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

Side effects? I'm still running with the blank fitted and have noticed absolutely nothing!
.
I'm just happy that the gungy exhaust gas is no longer going into the engine so hopefully the swirl flaps and throttle are at a reduced risk of failing.
.
Kind regards from Fred.

Lots of info in here:
http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic18289.html
and here:
http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic13553.html

You will notice a bit longer warm up period, but
after some time the coolant and oil temp will
reach between 85 and 95 plus minus dependent
of driving style and outside temp of course.
Didn't notice any big difference at about zero,
but at -15 celcius there was now doubt any more.

FL2Printzern thanks a lot for your update !

I am planning to do this job in the coming weeks.

To Remove the swirl flaps you just pull out the metal rod and recover the flaps from the manifold? or you break the flaps inside and after you pull the metal rod?

I guess after you just blanked the hole where the metal shaft was.

Hi!
First you remove the metal clip that hold the vacuum arm. Don't forget to put it back in place after removing the rod! I used a little silicon rubber as well, you don't want a leak here. I warmed the flaps a little bit with a blow torch and pulled out the brass rod. After that it was easy to break the flaps apart. You do absolutely nothing with the small holes in the sidewalls where the flaps was fasten. Remove the vacuum hose and seal it in the other end. The round vacuum membrane housing can be twisted off. You will see it all when you got the manifold in your hand.
Good luck!

Hi Fl2Printzern,

I come upon this thread looking for some advise on the EGR blanking topic.... To my horror i saw something very too fimiliar looking in your pictures!!!!!
I replaced my boost pipe - turbo to intercooler - a while back and found 2 pieces of brass rodd. Finally i know what these are!!! Not even Land Rover could indicate what these were Mad

Sorry for what follows but I have been waiting VERY long to get to someone that has the know how, thus i have to ask you some questions that concerns me:
What exactly does these flaps do?
Can one only remove these if the EGR has not been blanked off?
I am running a 2007 manual, can I try to only blank off the EGr with the balnking plate without modifying the ECU - (I dont have the means to do this)?

Regards

DewaldB

Hi!
Here you have some kind of explanation: http://swirlflaps.co.uk/what-are-swirl-flaps.html
(Or excuse for using them...)
The answer to yout question number 2 and 3 is yes yes.
My 2007 runs better than ever without this silly Censored - good fuel economy, less pollution on MOT test.
Thumbs Up

Hi FL2printzern,

Thank you very much for your reply and for your post on this topic!!!

Now I have to get the courage to tackle removing the inlet Shocked

I noticed that you have a modified air intake - reffering to the blue hoses.

Is there a topic relating to this?

Thanks again!!!! Very Happy

No topic related to this. I was only interested to see how much oil that dissapeard into the air inlet. During last winter it was between 1 and 2dl. The rest of the air mod was to get access to the EGR plug from above.....
(and got rid of the silly organ pipe as well, I can also remove the top engine cover without disconnecting the air inlet.)

This looks really neat.

I have a intermittent acceleration problem that my local workshop has diagnosed as a faulty MAF sensor. I cleaned this sensor(was black with soot) and the vehicle feels more lively but still has the intermittend problem - hunting revvs @1700RPM - 2500 RPM.
This is why I have been looking into the ERG blanking and found your pictures very interesting.

I cant seem to wonder if this problem relates to the Swirl flaps that has broken.
My vehicle has never gone into limp mode or given any errors, I have to think that something is stuck somewhere it should not be.....hopefully these broken flaps has not caused any fruther damage.

Do you by any chance have a picture of the silicone rubber that you used after putting the metal clip back that hold the vacuum arm or will this be obvious when i take the manifold out?

It will be obvious, I just used a silicon sealant - gasket sealant.

Thanks to your advice I removed successfully the swirl flaps from the manifold gave it a good clean, and change the heaters while manifold was removed .

I found that the actuator rod was broken and flaps where stuck in closed position! no wonder why all the black smoke under acceleration!!

I placed a blanking plate on the egr and so far no faults appear.

By any chance do you know the diameter of the intake pipe engine side and filter side I am planning to remove the organ pipe and fit a proper oil separator.
